Dear a,

Did you provide us with the study of exercise and

Substance P? I can't remember where I read it. It

cited negative aspects of exercise. If you didn't

post it, I will try to find it. Thanks Iris

Iris,

I¹m not sure which article you are referring to. One of the many theories

about the cause of fibromyalgia is abnormalities in regulation of chemical

neurotransmitters like Substance P and serotonin, which play a role in

inflammation and pain.

Substance P has been found in several studies to be elevated in the spinal

fluid of FM patients. The higher the level of Substance P in the brain and

spine, the more intense the sensation of pain.

An elevated spinal fluid level of substance P is not specific for FM.

Substance P has been noted in patients with osteoarthritis of the hip and

chronic low back pain. It¹s also found in synovial fluid. It is likely

that these findings are related to the presence of pain. But when the

researchers applied pressure to the tender points of a FM patient, it had no

effect on the level of substance P. I¹ll look and see if I can find the

article.
