Is anemia part of this disease? My rheumy says no. I think it is. My

doc thinks I have ibd cuz im anemic. So he wants me to have a

colonoscopy done to rule that out. Yuck. Granted I dont have insurance

so this would come out of pocket like everything else. Any advice on

this subject would be appreciated. Thanks.

Not a doctor here, but most sites mention the following:

*A number of blood tests may give an indication that you have Adult Still's

disease. One type of test measures counts of certain blood cells: Typically,

the number of white blood cells and platelets are high, while the red blood

cell count is often low (anemia).*

So if you have Stills, your red blood cell count is often low. Also, if you

are taking a lot of NSAIDS, they can cause stomach upset as well.

Prescription meds like predisone cause some people stomach upset and

diarrhea. I'd really wonder if it's not just the Stills, myself, unless you

had a lot of other symptoms.

Small bit of good news is that if you are being treated by prednisone for

Stills, they use that for IBD as well... you may already be getting treated

for it!

Good luck Suzan... hope it's just a wild goose chase and not a problem.

Hi Suzan

I think that anaemia is part of Stills as I have recently been diagnosed as

anaemic and have been given iron pills for 6 weeks and then I will have a

blood test to see if they have helped. Did you have iron pills, I don't

know what ibd cuz im anaemic means but it sounds more complicated that just

anaemia.

Hope you are able to get the colonoscopy done.

All the best

Dear Suzan,

I was severely anemic when first diagnosed and was told by my doctor that a

certain type of anemia was indicative of Still's disease. I am not a doctor

and cannot give you the answers as to whether you need a colonoscopy or not.

For that you would need to decide. The best of luck to you.

Is anemia part of this disease? Thanks.

Hey Suzan,

I've also been Anemic for quite a while, now. Whether it's due to the

Still's, me being underweight, or both, I don't know. I know that the

Anemia has gotten worse in the last half a year, though.

,

My RD and a Hematologist have been working with me and have said that my anemia

and low platelets are all related to my Stills. However, at the start indicated

that it is not always one of the so called major markers. I have also seen

StillsRelated anemia in my literature search. Therefore it is important that

they rule out other causes of anemia, like colon cancer, lymphomas, B12

deficiency and iron deficiency. Drugs like MTX can also cause anemia by

competing with folic acid.

The final test they have run on many of us, including me was a biopsy of my bone

marrow. Like many of the Stills tests, case of ruling out everything else

In other words get the other tests done. BTW The prep for the colonoscopy is

yucky.

Depending on how they do it, it's really not that bad. I had one a few years

ago, and couldn't get the thought out of my head that I was glad I was ME,

and not the DOCTOR. lol

I was a little nauseated, and at one point asked the nurse to hold my hand a

sec (nurses can be amazing help if you just ask for it), and it was over

before I knew it.
