Guest guest
The Thoughtful House Center for Children in Austin is widely known and respected around the world for their work with children on the spectrum. They follow the DAN protocol. I have not heard of the doctor you are talking about, but I know the Center in Austin and their staff have been credited for huge gains in a great number of children. I know many parents who take their kids there and have seen huge improvements, including my own son. I don't think it hurts to at least go to this doctor in San , but I would get a second opinion from the Thoughtful House. Hope this helps. Write back with further questions. Guest guest
We go to the CARE clinic in Austin Texas which unlike Thoughtfulhouse takes my insurance. It's nice to have a choice and we are lucky to have both these clinics in Austin. My son's constipation was greatly improved with extra vitamin c and Oxypowder. I no longer use Miralax at all. I credit CARE clinic with helping my son achieve balance in his gut and his absorption of nutrients is getting better as well. Guest guest
www.mycareclinics.com Kazuko is an amazing woman who sold her car and her wedding ring to help fund CARE clinics. The level of personal one to one care my son receives there is more like a family than a treatment facility. I've had 7 different DAN doctors and this place was the only one who knew more than I did. As my son continues to get better we tweak and adjust and they support me, they understand his needs and they have seen first hand his improvements and his shortcomings. I think knowing that your on the right track and knowing that someone will be there to help you pinpoint the issue is a huge relief. My son was on several RX medications for anxiety and constipation and lack of sleep and hyperactivity. All have been eliminated now. In fact when he went to school this fall the teachers from last year asked me what I had been doing this summer, this was a totally different kid! I've also actually had someone tell me that perhaps my son would have gotten better with no intervention! I'm hopeful for the day someone tells me he was never autistic in the first place. Only I've got video....lots of it. Bottom line, Thoughtfulhouse, CARE clinic both are doing wonders do what's best for you. Guest guest
Marlee, Miralax can cause a condition called 'lazy colon' where your son's colon depends on Miralax to do its job for it and can't go without it. this condition is more likely to happen after extended use of this drug. It also has some behavioral side effects for some of our children because of its chemical make up. (it makes their behavior worsen) Have you looked into a G/F, C/F diet? This helps as many as 70% of our children with their gut issues and many other improvements. http://www.gfcfdiet.com/ http://www.geocities.com/arnfl/booksnlinks.html http://gfcf-diet.talkaboutcuringautism.org/index.html http://www.talkaboutcuringautism.org/index.htm Digestive enzymes are also helpful (Petizyde, Zyme Prime, No-fenol) are some enzymes that help digest food, especially gluten and casein. http://www.houston-enzymes.com/ Kirkman Labs also has some enzymes that are helpful. I am not advocating either company, I think they both have good products, I am not associated with either. www.kirkmanlabs.com A very helpful supplement for severe constipation is oxy powder colon cleanse. http://www.oxypowder.com/?s_kwcid=oxy-powder|1189072508 Nagla > > My son darian was diagnosed with autism at age 2 and around 3-4 yrs. > old he started getting constipated very often. now it's gotten so bad > he has to be on miralax every other day or he will not go at all! what > should i do? will he ever be able to go on his own without miralax? >
Guest guest
My son has been on miralax for about a year and is dependent on it . I've asked his GI numerous times about why he cannot " go " without it ,whether it was due to a motility issue. He keeps reassuring that it's safe and does not cause motility issues . Another thing I've tried that works quickly ,(need to be at home ) is Pear Juice or nectar. The Sorbitol in it is what makes you " go " . So,that's another option. Nagla are there any papers or articles you've found on miralax and dependency? stacey > > > > My son darian was diagnosed with autism at age 2 and around 3-4 yrs. > > old he started getting constipated very often. now it's gotten so bad > > he has to be on miralax every other day or he will not go at all! > what > > should i do? will he ever be able to go on his own without miralax? > > >
Guest guest
One of my clients has had this problem for the past year and like Nagla said, my client’s doctor strongly opposed the use of miralax for these kids because of the behavioral side effects she has seen on normal functioning kids. Instead, she recommended benefiber – I believe 1 tsp in the morning and 1 tsp in late afternoon. One of my client’s problems has been that her stool is very wide, so she doesn’t want to go because it hurts. The doctor explained that constipation causes the colon to expand and that it would take some time for the colon to shrink back down. The benefiber has helped, but my client does like apples and raisins and eats one or both daily. Another thing she takes is ground flax seeds. You can put it in juice or sprinkle it on a peanut butter sandwich or add it to just about anything they like that you can hide it in. Guest guest
Lazy colon is real. My mother-in-law took Miralax under a doctor's care for a year for constipation and she wound up not being able to have a bowel movement on her own. She lost the sensation to go. She ended up having to go to a specialist and had a procedure where the doctor took probes of vary diameters to stimulate her rectum, that has helped a little but not enough so she has to take Milk of Magnesia everyday. She so regrets taking Miralax for so long. CReeceLooking for simple solutions to your real-life financial challenges? Check out WalletPop for the latest news and information, tips and calculators.
