Guest guest
I'm so happy for all of you. WOW! love to all, kat EMPLOYEE OF THE YEAR AWARD! Just want to share some super news with my friends on this list. Our son, Levine, has just found out he is going to receive the Austin Mayor's Award as Employee of the Year from the Mayor's Committee for People with Disabilities. AND his employer, the Austin Hilton, is getting the large Employer of the Year Award. Our son is 18, nonverbal and has been homeschooled since he was in middle school. We have run an ABA program since he was 6. He just started working at the Hilton a year ago as a steward in the kitchen. This is a job he got completely on his own, He did NOT have any involvement with any schools or agencies. He interviewed, met with the HR director, general mangers, directors, etc and they said they would make it work and they have. He loves his job and is a valuable employee. I can go on and on about this but I am so ecstatic about him and them getting the award. I just want to share this with you because it shows that anyone can succeed as long as you persevere and believe it can happen. There was a quote in last years Autism Awareness calendar from the Hilton that says "We have 21 languages spoken here and his is just another" This is so true but now we need to get the rest of our world to see it that way. Guest guest
, You really don't have to talk to work at many jobs. You just have to take the person's strengths and find a position that incorporates though strengths. He is nonverbal and has about 5 consistent signs he uses. He does follow directions which sometimes needs verbal prompts that he has learned through the home ABA program. He has a job coach just to keep him focused. This is our personal job coach. Not one through an agency. He is also one of his ABA therapists. SO we just looked at what can do and found a job where it fits well. ALso, at the Hilton since 21 languages are spoken there, him being nonverbal is really no different then another language, which is how the Hilton treats it. Let me know if you would like more info and send me your personal email address Levine -----Original Message-----From: Texas-Autism-Advocacy [mailto:Texas-Autism-Advocacy ] On Behalf Of MouserSent: Friday, October 10, 2008 12:57 PMTo: Texas-Autism-Advocacy Subject: Re: EMPLOYEE OF THE YEAR AWARD! , First congrats about your son's award. Guest guest
Hi , My son is only 10 but certainly I am thinking ahead about what jobs would he be able to do when he is older and still non-verbal, besides being a model (just kidding). Guest guest
Thank you for sharing this extremely upbeat email. What an amazing accomplishment for and for you and your husband and of course, his wonderful employer who obviously sees the glass as half full rather than half empty. If only we could bottle this attitude and pass it on! It's my hope that when my 12 year old is 's age he will be given such a wonderful oppurtunity and rise to the occassion the way did!! How very inspiring! Congratulations! Fran Think Autism.Think Cure.
