Guest guest
I'm interested in learning which resources are best to use as a social skills curriculum for my almost 12yo dd. She was recently dx with PDD-NOS and unofficially AS. The more I read about AS in girls, the more I see her fitting the dx. Anyway, she's struggled all of her life and we've always known there was something going on (once we figured out we weren't just bad parents). She is also dx GAD and Impulsivity Disorder, as well as LDs. We have 3 younger children also. Two are NT and I'm not sure about my 2yo. My 12 yo is aggressive to them (not terribly, but still it's not acceptable) and she is also very inappropriate socially. She's not withdrawn. She's way too outgoing and speaks her mind freely to anyone and everyone. She also has behavior issues at home and in public that she generally doesn't have at school. She goes to a private school for kids with LDs, so that has been a tremendous blessing. Previously we homeschooled, but when she hit puberty, it was too much for all of us. I'm also looking for books or resources that deal with parenting AS children. I've tried many things tailored toward NT kids, and some have helped some, but I'm wondering if there's something great out there for parents of AS kids. Thanks, Goodale
Guest guest
Dear , I have a 10 year old girl with AS and LDs. She currently works with 2 SLPs, one at school and one private. The speech language pathologist (in case you don't know the abbreviation yet!) works on pragmatics. My daughter has no trouble speaking- she just doesn't understand the give and take of conversation (she tends to perserverate) and has trouble reading facial expressions and body language. She needs help learning to " read " social situations. The school SLP does 30 min 1:1 and 30 minutes out facilitating at recess, per week. Our private SLP does a social skills group with other kids that are a good " fit " with our daughter 60 minutes per week. Both SLPs use Winner as the basis of their work (check out her stuff, she's awesome).
