Hi, I live in Houston TX, hot hot hot also...

I got a bottle of GTS KT and made some tea/sugar and put 1/2 bottle (8oz) of the

KT in the tea 8oz in a 1 qt jar 16oz total and after 2 weeks had a nice scoby,

1/16 " then used it to graduate to more tea and a bigger container and now I

have scobydoo's coming out of the wazoo....

Use the GTS original.....

have attempted in this new climate/environment. I could not move my SCOBY, so I

tried to get a new one going using a bottle of store-bought Kombucha, it molded.

It can get quite warm outside here, although we keep the house between 78 and 84

degrees during the summer. Should I just scrap the idea of trying to grow my

own SCOBY, and look for a local source? Or has anyone here had any luck growing

one from store bought KT?

Even easier.

Store bought GTs KT - original.

Pour it in a larger mouthed container - example - a wide mouth quart

jar - cover with coffee filter and just wait. It will form a lovely

scoby in a relatively brief period of time. This was how I made my

first one.

Later I got one from someone who started hers before GTs moved to

their " enlightened " version. If you can get the original where you

are go for that. The enlightened works some have suggested the

culture is not as strong as the orignal was.

Avoid any of the non-refridgerated versions - I am trying to think of

an example - but anyway - I have seen them in bottles in the

soda/bottled fizzy water area of the store. I would almost promise

you those have been pasturized. You want the raw type in the

refidgerator case.

Hi Jaxi,

Now that I have been making my KT from a GTS " enlightened " bottle not the

original, After making 3 or 4 batches should my scoby now be a good quality

and viable as one from a original..... all the components are there just not the

quantity. And now up should be up to par.??

LOLOLOL, ! Does 'wazoo' stand for 'woodwork' ? This sounded so funny

as I read it to my husband! So you'll have lots of scobys to share no doubt?

Scobyly,

This is my first response in quite some time, due to major health issues

following surgery, that I've finally conquered (for now, anyway!). My 2-cents:

I've got an abundance of very thick, robust cultures (pics coming soon). I

started my KT operation Thanksgiving weekend 2011 using a bottle of KT's

original raw organic tea and a 2nd Mason jar, using

2-tablespoons of distilled white vinegar. The commercial KT never did form a

viable SCOBY, even after letting the jar set for a very long time. The jar with

the vinegar had a beautiful, white SCOBY in no time at all. I would not

recommend using the commercial KT for a starter, based on personal experience.

YMMV.

What do you mean by commercial?

Did you mean GT instead of KT ? KT's who is that?

Sorry for the confusion. Yes, that should have read GT's (commercial) KT, as in

store bought KT! ;)

KT is short for kombucha tea.

Malibu8987 - Just wondering...What else was in your jar with the distilled white

vinegar which produced the viable scoby? If it didn't have any kombucha in it I

don't see how it could create a kombucha scoby. Maybe a vinegar culture?

Hi RJ,

Curious, you got a Mother of Vinegar culture from distilled white vinegar? Was

it raw vinegar or pasteurized? Usually white vinegar is pasteurized. You

should not be able to grow a culture from distilled, ( heated) pasteurized

vinegar!

In any case it seems, if I understand you correctly, that you have a vinegar

culture rather than a Kombucha culture. They do have some bacteria in common but

they also have very different ingredients.

Making vinegar is a fine idea, just don't confuse it with Kombucha. They are not

the same.

Peace, Love and Harmony,

Bev
