Guest guest
OK, so I know this is going to sound nasty, but it works. As with most kids, they love gross stuff. Abby went thru a stage where she thought it was fun to make fart noises with just about every part of her body. She walked into the room one day and said " I can make my nose fart! " , and with that was snot all down her face. Yea, I know it's gross, but my first thought was " Wow! If I tell her to make her nose fart then I can get her to FINALLY blow her nose. " Works every time now. Go figure. If only I can get her to tie her shoes. Pennie Abby's Mom **************Make your life easier with all your friends, email, and favorite sites in one place. Guest guest
Hi Karmen, Nose blowing can be complicated and involves body proprioception regarding the diaphragm. Often children on the spectrum have body awareness issues ie)inhalation/exhalation issues (they tend to be shallow breathers). OT's often work on these issues by playing various blowing types of games to increase deep breathing (which incidentally helps to decrease the stress response). I worked with a 20 year old man with dev. delays and he is not aware of how his body feels when inhaling vs exhaling and also could not knowingly generate the power to blow. When he did not have a cold, I would get him to lie on the floor, put a kleenex on his face and try to get him to blow it off (through his nose only) hoping that it would create a motor plan. It has not worked yet. Do you see an OT? It might be helpful. nne nne Papadopoulos OT Reg. Guest guest
Yes, my daughter has seen 5 private OT's and she receives OT in school 3 times per week. None have been successful with techniques to help with nose blowing. Because parents are often better experts than the 'EXPERTS', coming across ways to help their children through trial and error or just happening upon a solution, I thought I'd go to those sources to see how others have handled this situation. One parent on another group suggested I hold a tissue in from of my daughter's nose, have her roll her lips in, and use just nose air to make the tissue move. Sounds similar to what you described. I'll try both approaches. You never know. Thanks., Karmen Re:Anyone know a trick for teaching nose blowing? Guest guest
Karmen teaching nose breathing is of a begin because if she is of a mouth breatehr she needs to know or learn of how to breath from the nose too. so teaching her by showing her closed mouth and breath through the nose. model it to her and then practice this and if she gets of that then teacher of her harder nose breathing but saying hear my nose breathing? and model it breathing loudly then get of her to imitate of this over time teach of her to blow hard with her her nose but sady if you put a tissues over you nose and do this she then cant see of the process she needs to see because if she does not she might assume the action is of hidden and cant infer what you are of directing for her to do. now not saying blow out of the thinbgs from you nose because that might fear her some but blow of harder showing of her take a deep breath and then blow. and then when she practices this enough teach her this is of called blowing the nose. all people do this when their noses get yucky or stuffy so when we blow the nose when we have of yucky noses we use tissues to wipe the yucky away and then we wash of hands to make sure of bad germs go to the trash and get of washed away and not left to our hands. another things is of get of a small pinwheel and show of her blowing with mouth and then blowing with nose to make the pinwheel spin. so she can see blwoing comes from both the nose and mouth. and it causes an action. not sure of the developmental ages of you child so not sure where she is of age yet in motor planing and such. sondra sondra
Guest guest
Karmen teaching nose breathing is of a begin because if she is of a mouth breatehr she needs to know or learn of how to breath from the nose too. sondra Sorry did not finish my thinking and stopped in the middle and went on with another thinking nor realizing had not finshed of the first thinking..... so it should be to have sayed teaching nose breathing is of a begin place before teaching of blowing. because many with developmental issues as a younger child often never learn to breath by the nose they are of mouth breathers. some grow into adults still a mouth breather because of the developmental issues. but one can teach a person of autism to nose breathe. so this is of the first step before to learn of to blow is of how to breath through the nose. can you observe of her and tell of me is she is of more a nose breather or mouth breather? this will help of me know which words to share to you in this. My Missy is of 15 and can wipe of her nose independently but she shared to me a few weeks back that she never ever blows her nose because she does not like the feeling of that. so to her the sensory sensation is of adversive to her but she is of rare to have of a yucky nose that I to have of to remind of her to wipe or clean of her nose. for me cant stand of a stuff nose and haveof it much so because of allergies and sinus issues. then when it clears the sjogrens dries it out so much that it causes small tares and sores in the nose. and it hurts to breath in the nose because of the drying effect. so I to end up being of a mouth breather for this reasons. so if she is of a mouth breather make of sure to rule out a medical reason for this instead of it just being of developmental. but the sad is that mouth breathers often will carry a much not nice breath from what i to learned and readed of it. I to ahve of a much strong fear of the bad odor of the breath of me because of this and yet I to brush of the teeth 2 times each day and brush of the tongue and such and sometimes brush more and around 3 times a week I to brush frist with proxide and then brush with the tooth paste to help in the bacteria that will grow as a mouth breather. not saying to do this because most will tell of you not to use of the peroxide because of things not sure of but for self I to use it but not daily. sondra
