Yes, it will! Just look for a therapist who takes Medicaid and they will get you going.

Will Traditional Medicaid Pay For Private Speech?

Does anyone know this? My son has traditional medicaid and he does get 30 mins of speech at school a week, but it is with three other kids and I dont see that it is doing much good. I would like to get him private speech in addition to what he is receiving at school so he could get some one on one help if his insurance would pay for it.

Thanks for any info,

medicaid will pay for speech, ot, pt. you need to have an evaluation completed, pediatrician statement that it's needed.

you need to be very careful with the school district... make sure that you sign NO YOU CANNOT BILL MEDICAID FOR PROVIDING SPEECH THERAPY. Otherwise, school will bill medicaid for those hours and depending on the number of hours approved, medicaid will not pay for private therapy.

you may also want to address your concerns of group speech with the school. maybe 30 minutes of group twice a month and 30 minutes individual twice a month.

you need to be mindful with goals... private needs to have separate goals from school in the beginning to see who gets the results and why.

I did not know that you could sign "no you cannot bill medicaid for speech" they way the school talked if we didnt sign it then they would not provide speech. So if we sign no they still will provide speech at school to our son?

Thanks so much for the info,

My daughter get Private Speech therapy and therapy at school. She has private and Medicaid pick up the copays. Some therapy places only take Medicaid as long as progress is seen then yes Medicaid pays.

You can sayi that you believe you were misinformed by a represenative employed

by them & that u want to have the paperwork explained again. Review it and stay

with it yet this time do not include the medicaid info.

Speech?

I would simply tell them that you made a mistake in signing it....that you've

been advised by your case manager(even if you don't have one, they don't know

that) or you could tell them someone with the Medicaid Dept. advised against it

and that's all the school needs to know!

Hi ,

BTW, congrats on the new house!

You absolutely can sign "no" on that school form denying them access to your son's medicaid number. My son's case manager advised me a couple of years ago to do that because she said that it can jeopardize outside services that you receive through Medicaid--contrary to what the school will tell you. I've told my school that I might "consider" signing it if in return they do something for me, like maybe increase my sons's therapy times??(which has been an issue since they've been in school!) Of course, they've told me they can't do that, which didn't surprise me. My feeling is, why would you ever want to give the schools a "freebie" without getting anything in return for your child? They did tell me that they use that money to buy things for the schools like computers, etc. As I mentioned, unless I knew that it would directly help my child and his Special Ed program--I'm not ever going to give it to them. I don't want you to get the wrong impression, signing "no" on that form has never caused any negativity between the school and I--my son(and your son) will always continue to receive the same services he's receiving now--so don't worry about that issue. If you feel weird about siging "no", just write down that your case manager advised against it because it can jeopardize outside services that you receive. That's what I write on the form each year when they give it to me. Good luck~

YES, they have to provide it whether you sign it or not.

It's just that if you don't, they can't build another football stadium with your child's money...

(bad girl, I know......)

But again, I need to share how I wish someone would push for any funds generated by medicaid money in the public schools - go directly into the Special Education budget - and NOT general revenue. Money the schools get from our kids, should ONLY go into the special education budget.

How do I cancel this if I have already signed it? We just had his IEP and I signed the paper because like I said they made it seem like he wouldnt get the services if I didnt sign. Can I go into the school and cancel this?

My understanding is that, even if you signed the form at school,

private speech therapy trumps the school and Medicaid will pay them

first. The form at school just allows them to collect from Medicaid

if/when there is no other therapist involved. If I am wrong, please,

someone correct me.

You can tell them that you found out that they "misinformed" you about the services and that you elect to change your mind and not have them be paid by MEDICAID. That is the truth...isn't it?

yes you can!

just tell them that you have changed your mind, ask for another form and sign it. get a copy of all of the pages that you have signed, including the new one that says NO! then, 6 months from now, call the medicaid office and ask them to tell you all of the charges against your child's medicaid number. when they tell you that there are charges beyond the date of paper that you said NO! ask for the fraud department. and get bus with that!

and that is so completely ridiculous. if you have a lousy therapist then you won't see progress no matter how much time is spent in therapy.
