Guest guest
Go see your doctor, you may have a urinary tract infection. Subject: bladder control To: Autism_in_Girls Date: Friday, December 12, 2008, 9:20 AM OK, this is embarrassing, but I really want to know. Is there anyone on this list or child of a person on this list who is fully toilet trained and has been for many years, but still has accidents? I was toilet trained at the usual age, but I seem to have trouble holding my urine. The need to pee comes on very strong and the only way I can hold it is to crouch with my ankle jammed into my crotch. If I wait long enough, the need will often go away (when I was younger I used to say 'I don't need to pee anymore' but my mother, knowing that if I hadn't peed the need was still there, would always insist I try anyway). Usually when I wet myself I'm trying to get to the bathroom. Does anyone have any advice? Ettina
Guest guest
ettina I to have of similar issues and it is of embarrassing the things I to do to help of this is of to train of self to go the bathroom every 3 hours even if not feel teh urge because sometimes we do not recognize the need to go until it is of too powerful. so this has been to help of me not have of accidents and i to also wear a pad much so every day to help with the leaks, because ven now if I to sneeze, cough or laugh or anythings that causes you to lose of control to hold that muscle it will cause of me to wet of self some. I to find self grabbing self there and doing what you descrive with my hand instead of my feet and sometimes can stop it long enough to not wet of self completely but will still soak the pad some and so then have of to go back to the bathroom to change and place new panties on. if this is of new for you it can be of a bladder infection but if this is of a histroy of you then it can be of poor muscle control and recognizing motor responses yet. But training self can help of to go to the bathroom every 2-3 hours to prevent a build up of urine that comes too powerful. sondra
Guest guest
I'd go talk to the dr. You can make sure there are no infections and if not then it could be that you simply have a weak bladder and they do have medications that can help. It's very common in women, and increases with age or after having a baby. I realize you are not an older woman and haven't had a child, but if there is no infection and you're already having trouble, then it's possible the problem will just get worse... One thing you can do to help is the excercise called Kegal's (I think that's how it's spelled) Where you literally excercise your pelvic muscles by tightening everything down there as if you were going to stop your urine mid-stream. Hold it a few seconds and then release... do it over and over again for a few minutes several times a day. The best thing is that it can be done nearly anywhere - while watching TV, reading emails, driving down the road, sitting in the doctors office etc. Hope you get some relief! Guest guest
My mother in law had that problem, and there was something wrong with the structure of her urethra. I don't know exactly what, just that the muscles weren't working properly and she needed to have surgery to repair it. I know she tried medications first too. Anyway, probably not autism related, but see a doctor about it! My MIL was embarrassed about it for years before she finally would agree to see someone, and now she has no problems at all. She was too nervous to talk to her doctor about it (and she's a NURSE and should know better!) Good luck, and hopefully your doctor will be able to help you easily Amnesty > > OK, this is embarrassing, but I really want to know. > Is there anyone on this list or child of a person on this list who is > fully toilet trained and has been for many years, but still has > accidents? > I was toilet trained at the usual age, but I seem to have trouble > holding my urine. Guest guest
Does anyone to know why one would get of strong sting and or like a sharp shock like pains in the bladder or lower female parts but not the ovaries area. I to had of polyps remvoved last year and a fibroid tumor removed too. I to know been of past due again for the female checks because hate of them. Guest guest
You can get a urologist to do a bladder study where they test various aspects such as spacticity, leakage/damaged urethra, etc. I have had similar issues since having babies, I did get a blader lift but it hasn't helped 100%. Do you have a seizure disorder? Sometims seizures can affect organs like the bladder. HTH, Debi

Guest guest
Yes, Sondra, I am. I just now got home from the hospital, last night I had posted from my laptop. He said the tumor was the size of a football/basketball but he thought almost certainly no cancer. The local pathologist agreed, no cancer. He's sending it to Emory to the best pathologist in the nation in his opinion, to make sure. But he says he would be very shocked if they found anything cancerous at all. I think maybe he's wanting to use it as a journal article but not sure. Thanks for everyone's support. I'm very sore, they cut me from my lower rib cage to just above my pubic bone in the front. But I'm doing better every day, doc said he would expect me to be able to do almost anything I did within 2 weeks. Guest guest
debi do they think this could be of the cause of the odd illness things you had of the seizure like things and the shaky spells and such the tumor pushing around vital organs and not letting them work well? sondra
Guest guest
He hasn't really said. That's what I think some of it was from, at least the passing out part. It was pushing my ascending colon (part of the large intestines that goes up) & kidney to the other side of my body. I'm hoping my blood pressure will stay normal or closer to normal now that it's out. My blood pressure has been normal to low since the removal, don't know yet if is from the pain meds or from the kidney having space. Just a strange thing, that's for sure. I used to want a tummy tuck so bad, now I'm thinking after all this pain that a flabby belly isn't so bad! Debi -

Guest guest
Yes, very funny. But I will take anything to help with weight loss!! My belly button lost a staple & is dehissing (coming apart) a little so I'll probably not be on much, have to keep it clean & away from tension. When I sit straight up it tends to pull at it a little. Debi
Guest guest
Debi, glad to hear you're on the mend. It's amazing the size of the tumor! It's so surprising to hear that a person could have something that big inside & not be able to feel it. You don't want the stiched area to heal tight so you can't stand up straight, so if it's dehissing, doesn't that mean the dr needs to do something so it won't dehiss when you stand up straight & that you'll be able to stand normally after it heals? Enjoy being with your family during the holiday & I hope you're not stressing over not being able to do your usual holiday stuff. Marie > Yes, very funny. Guest guest
It's healing. It was pulling apart slightly but I put some stuff on it & kept it taped really tightly. The standing up I believe is linked more to the muscles, this was the skin around the belly button. I have to go see him Monday, if it gets any worse I'll see him before then. I have on an abdominal binder so it's helping to hold everything in & take the pressure off the area. I'm not stressing much over the holiday stuff, I made sure we had bought for the girls before surgery in case something happened. We may do one final shopping trip this weekend, and Craig loves doing a Christmas Eve shopping -- he's nuts! <g> Debi

Guest guest
Sondra, Â I too have had many health issues, some of which you have described. Â I have had a lot of problems with my abdomen, ovarian cysts, endometriosis, adhesions, kidney stones...lots of surgeries. 11 in one year and 7 in another. Not to mention at least one major medical problem a year requiring emergency room or surgery. Â I do not know if it is realated to my autism or not. Or if all women have issues and because I have autism I am more sensitive to internal pain. I can not tolerate pain. Guest guest
I experienced this and even wet the bed into my twenties... Â I read in a magazine about an exersise you can do to strengthen the muscle that controls the release of urine. Â When you are in mid stream stop going and then start again. When you figure out what muscle you need to be using it is pretty easy to exercise this muslce anytime any where without being on the toilet or peeing your pants. Â I don't wet the bed anymore and I don't have as urgent need to pee... Â I had a bladder study done once, I had to pee so bad that I could not pee...I literally had to sit on the potty and push on my stomach because it would not come out. To my great relief I was finally able to go, but I could not complete the final part of the study. Â Anyhow, this exercise might help you too... Guest guest
This about bladder control is all interesting .I am finally finding time to write, being up most of the night with my DD who has a cold. She cannot sleep when she is stuffed up. She has bladder control issues that I've found no real answer for, though the medication ( Ditropan) is helping somewhat now. She needs to pee very frequently, at times it has been thirty or forty times a day. At times she has gotten up eight or ten times at night to pee. She will sometimes have accidents and seems unaware that they occurred. She has had many tests for urinary tract infection and it has never been positive. She was even treated as if she had one a few times to see if it would help, and it didn't. She had an ultrasound which was very difficult for her, and it showed a normal bladder. Interesting thing is, when she had the ultrasound she had to drink and drink, and it was very hard for her to hold the pee ( as it has been for me when I had them!). When she was finally allowed to empty, she peed and peed and then they did another ultrasound, and though she said she was empty, the bladder was still half full. So I felt that meant that she didn't get the signal of when she is empty, and so she is maybe never able to completely release all the pee and that is why she has to go so frequently. Also, she has sometimes, not often , said she hurts there, and yet it seems like it doesn't last long. The urologist has said a few times that the test where they fill her with dye and do imaging would help tell what is going on, but we have agreed over and over that she would not tolerate it. As it is, it can take four or five adults to hold her when she has had to undergo procedures like having stitches, and she vomits from anxiety at dentist and doctor appointments. I don't want to put her through any trauma that isn't necessary. And since the ultrasound showed normal bladder and her UTI tests are always negative the urologist isn't too concerned. So the doctor says she has bladder spasms, and we don't know why. Tried ditropan over a year ago and I wasn't sure it was helping much, so then went to detrol and that didn't give lots of relief but did give some, and then took her off it for a while to see how she did and the frequency went way up. So after trying to get insurance to cover another med ( can't remember the name) with no luck, I put her back on ditropan and it does seem to be helping now. It is not a complete " fix " but it does provide relief. And school has been told that she should be allowed to go whenever she needs to. She needs to try to empty when she goes, and I don't know how much of that she understands or even can feel. I don't like the idea of her being on medication for this forever, but I also don't want her to be tortured by so many trips to the bathroom and have her sleep ( already not the soundest!) to be interrupted. This has been going on for years. She didn't toilet train for pee until she was 6, though she was able to use a potty at 4 and 5 but also had accidents. I wish I knew what was really going on and also if it is safe to have her on this medication long term. Guest guest
I'm having an issue right now with my child that I work with at a school that she is terrified of the bathrooms. I believe that she sat on an automatic toilet and has been terrified ever since. But she won't use the bathrooms at school. And she needs to. When I take her home after school it really bothers me that she is screaming and crying for the bathroom but she won't use it at school. I don't want her ending up wtih a bladder infection or something worse. Her parents are babying her about the bathroom issue. Just telling her that it's still clean and she won't walk into a stall or bathroom without having a fit. And she is crawling on the floor to look up in the stall at the toilet because she doesn't want to walk in until she knows that it's " clean " but it's an elementary school and very rarley do kids flush. Then when she does go she won't flush it. So I have to tell her to flush it and then she freaks out!. I need some advice as to what to do. Thanks-- > > OK, this is embarrassing, but I really want to know. > Is there anyone on this list or child of a person on this list who is > fully toilet trained and has been for many years, but still has > accidents? > I was toilet trained at the usual age, but I seem to have trouble > holding my urine. Guest guest
Also, have you tried starting out small with walking in for so many seconds without getting on the floor & standing, then leaving, then adding time she has to stay in standing? Given her air freshener if the odors are too bad, tried to take her to a teacher-only toilet? I know our school has one that is only one stall, actually a water closet of sorts. Maybe her having one that is " just her's " for a while while working on the other stuff could be doable? No easy answers. Debi
Guest guest
take her to the bathroom at quiet times of its use and allow her space and check to assure the toilet is of already flushed (if it is not DO NOT flush of it in her presence)and to assure the stall is of clean and when you find of one then encourage of her to use that one. if she is of fearful of germs and yucky things in that bathroom try of allowing her to wear magic gloves(of the latex sorts) to help her feel cleaner/ if she likes of this sort of things. then allow of her the privacy to use the bathroom,,,, do not encourage flushing but encourage of use.... and then when she is of done if she is of able to step out of the stall and or bathroom okay then you flush of it if you feel the need too. the goal will be of to just get her going not the other parts of using the bathroom as that will be of not an issues of this task but the teaching of to go is of the task. as she builds of skills and safe then you can be of to add a new task with the going so that the task are of broken down into safe easily managed tasks. my children several of them were of really strongly adversive to public toilets too. My missy was visually and smell defensive and so will not go into a public place for years but now can go in a public place to pee but not of the other things. My son is of this too he will not go except to pee in a toilet but if he has of to do more he will not go unless home. as for self the automatic toilets cause of me great stress too because they go off when you do not expect of it and or at times even before you are of done and this causes me anxiety to them and they are of loud and the bathroom walls and stalls make the noise intensified and echoey/. sondra
