Hi ,

Just curious if you where on Pred during your pregnancy and, wondering if it

is known if it crosses into the breast milk? I'd love to well enough to

have another baby so I'm gathering info in the hopes I'll need it some

day...hopefully soon!!!

PS I have a 23 month old!

Take care,

Mandi

Thanks, . I am really not opposed to taking MTX or a similar

drug if I need it, but I want to: (A) Be sure I need it and (B) explore

breastfeeding-breastfeeding-<WBR>friendly options first so I can avoid b

wean. My baby is 19 months old and I have a feeling that my dr will not

be sympathetic since nursing beyond a year is outside the cultural

norm. (I am confident in her skills, but her...personality leaves a bit

to be desired.) But it is important to me to continue on our natural

course. Ultimately, it will come down to a cost/benefit analysis. If I

am so ill that I cannot function properly then it may be that my son

will benefit more from having a medicated than from continuing to

nurse. However, right now, I am doing really well. I just went down

another 5mg of pred and still feel great! Its just hard for me to wrap

my brain around needing MORE medicine when I don't FEEL sick, KWIM?

I actually haven't done much research yet on methotrexate or even the

long-term effects of prednisone. I need to get on that. Anyone have

favorite websites/books for medication info? I've going to contact

some experts on medications and breastfeeding to see if they can give

me any leads too. I just want to have more information and better

questions to ask next time I see my doctor!

Hi Mandy,

I was not on pred when pregnant because I only got sick in the last

few months so I don't know much about it other than that it is

considered a category C: " RISK CANNOT BE RULED OUT:

Adequate,well-controlled human studies are lacking, and animal

studies have shown a risk to the fetus or are lacking as well. There

is a chance of fetal harm if the drug is administered during

pregnancy; but the potential benefits may outweigh the potential

risks. " so your ob or midwife could probably help you determine if it

was a good idea for you to stay on it while pregnant.

As far as bfing, it is found in small amounts in breastmilk but is

considered an L2 " Drug which has been studied in a limited number of

breastfeeding women without an increase in adverse effects in the

infant; And/or, the evidence of a demonstrated risk which is likely

to follow use of this medication in a breastfeeding woman is

remote. " I got this info from mom here:

http://www.kellymom.com/health/meds/aap-approved-meds.html

Hale's book Medications & Mother's Milk is also a great

resource on drugs and lactation! On amazon you can use the " search

inside " feature to look things up. Prednisone is on page 351.

HTH!
