Subject: Unlocking Autism Rep Mom is a " Mother Warrior " !!

Date:Thursday, September 25, 2008 7:08 PM

We are so proud to forward the following email from UA North Carolina

State Representative Kara Reichart who was selected as one of the

Warrior Moms to tell her story in McCarthy's new book. To all

the warrior moms and dads out there that refuse to give up on their

children, to give up on the search for truth and answers and to remain

silent, we salute you. It has been nearly 10 years since Unlocking

Autism was founded in our kitchens across the United States. I never

in my life thought the fight that we set out to fight those 10 years

ago would take this long with one in 500 children being diagnosed at

that time.

Thank you Kara for your work with Unlocking Autism, for lighting the

way for newly diagnosed families and for setting the bar high on how

to be brave.

Message from Kara Reichart below:

McCarthy's new book out today (September 23) features the story

of my son and his recovery from autism. The book is entitled,

Mother Warriors: A Nation of Parents Healing Autism Against All Odds.

I was one of ten mothers selected to be profiled in the book, which

chronicles our collective descent into hell after the diagnosis, and

the rise into hope after recovery. Some of the mothers profiled in

the book are well known ( , daughter of the founders of

Autism Speaks) and some of them are not so famous.

One of them has a pseudonym. That would be me.

A year ago when interviewed me, I elected not to use my real

name. I was essentially planning to reveal to the world that was,

at one time, a full dues-paying member of the autistic community,

which was fine with me, but my then-almost-ex-husband would not be

happy about that at all. In fact, he might take legal action if the

" big secret " were to get out. When I provided him with a courtesy

copy of the video I made (which mentioned in her book), he was

livid and indicated that as a " legal guardian " of , he did not

approve of the distribution of the film showing what was like

when he was autistic, and how far he has come since then. I wanted to

post it online to give the autism community some hope. He wanted to

destroy it and pretended it never happened. So I compromised. I

would tell my story with the freedom to reveal all the gory

details of diagnosis and recovery. In return, Ms. " Woods "

and her son " " would get the kudos for their Herculean efforts.

I'd say it was a good trade.

Our story is the first Warrior Mother profile presented (pp. 61-74).

Following the story is a small mini-chapter entitled " Canaries in the

Coal Mine, " no doubt a wink from to my website Little Canaries

(www.LittleCanaries.org). The book is available online at most major

booksellers, and a portion of the proceeds from sales will go to

Generation Rescue to help offset the cost of biomedical treatments for

autism that are not covered by insurance.

Take care,

Kara
