Guest guest
I can't answer the do cows need silage. However I do know how silage is made as my husband grew up on a cow dairy. Silage is basicly corn plants (the whole thing) chopped up and then fermented in an air free enviornment. If there's air then it will go bad and make the cows sick. That's what the plastic is for. My husband's family didn't use plastic, they used a big hole in the ground and covered it up with dirt. There's also another thing called haylage.. it's the same thing except it uses what would be hay instead. Either alfalfa or whatever that's too wet to make good hay, that gets chopped up for haylage. Hope that helps.http://homesteadingoatsfarm.angelfire.com
