Guest guest
While versed works great for the calming effects, it’s the worst tasting medicine that I have ever tasted in my whole entire life. Olivia would immediately throw it back up! That’s when I decided to taste it myself and whoa! Its horrible. I even had to wash my tongue off with a wash cloth! They ended up giving her valium, instead. Funny though, it doesn’t bother some kids at all… Good luck. HRH Ice-packs and VERSED First, Sandi, thanks for the legwork you are doing on those ice-packs... It does get very humid here in Jersey and the ice-packs you describe would be perfect for us as well.... Next, to anyone who has experience with it, Noelle was offered the drug, VERSED, for the first time by the anesthesiologist before her last casting as a way to sedate/calm her down before going to the OR.... I refused it because I didn't have time to research it. I have looked up several blogs about it online and most offer very positive testimonials from parents and docs who have used it on children, but I am still very skeptical about it. I'm not at the point of letting them use it on her yet, but I am concerned that as she gets older she may get increasingly agitated and aware of what is going on and possibly need something to calm her..... Have any of you allowed Versed before casting/surgery and what reactions, if any, have you seen? I'd appreciate any responses! Steph
Guest guest
Steph, had Versed prior to every cast, but 1. And his MRI. He had a total of 6 casts. I know it taste awful because the nurses always told us and would try to spit it out. He made him a little loopy.....just very relaxed. He started his casting at 15 months so he was aware of lots that was going on. The 1 time he didn't have it was terrible for him and I hated to see them carry him away so upset. He never had a bad reaction to it. And the 1 time in comparison to the other 5 there was no difference afterward. For it was good because he was so afraid of all the nurses and doctors. With the Versed it allowed him to stay calm and the staff be able to do what they needed to do prior to going to the OR.Tasha Kauffunger wrote: First, Sandi, thanks for the legwork you are doing on those ice-packs... Guest guest
Sophia is in her 8th cast now and had versed for 2/3 of those with no ill effects. It just made her groggy and she giggled a lot- which was pretty funny. It kept her happy and calm right before and going into the OR. Without it, they had to peel her off of me with her crying and screaming for Mommy. I know it was probably only a few minutes before she was asleep and hopefully doesn't remember it. She never threw it up or acted like the taste was that bad (which surprises me hearing how bad it tastes). But since she had been without food or liquid for hours, she probably was just glad to get anything. The reason some times we had it and sometimes we didn't was the differences in protocols at the various hospitals (her casts were done in Erie, Chicago, and Birmingham). Good luck and I'm sure you'll make the right decision for Noelle. Tina Ice-packs and VERSED First, Sandi, thanks for the legwork you are doing on those ice-packs... Guest guest
Hi ,Haley is always very upset at then time of casting and definitely knows what is going on. We have never used Versed b/c they only offer it right before she's taken back to the OR. She has already been upset for a while at that point and right when they get her back to the OR they put the gas on her, then, she's out. So for Haley, the Versed would only help her for maybe 5 min. I'm not even sure I could get her to drink it, honestly Of course, I want to do all I can to help her feel safe and secure. If they could give it to her right when we get there (when she's the most upset) I would let them give it to her. But they can't give it to her then b/c they say it would start to wear off before they got her back. When I asked about the Versed at one point, they told me most kids react very well while others become quite hyper when they come off of itHope this helps ya some :)Misty Kauffunger wrote: First, Sandi, thanks for the legwork you are doing on those ice-packs...
