Hi Connie,

Perhaps, “a shelf” would’nt

be the best way to describe. Basically, the rods are so prominent at the top,

you could rest/sit something small at the base of her neck without it falling off…..The

rods are more prominent now, then they have ever been.

Olivia Update

, So sorry to hear of this news. I wish I had

some words of wisdom for you. I am trying to picture what you mean by shelf at

the top of her rods "

The only experience I have to contribute would be that had a cervical

spinal fusion three years ago. Not for the same reasons but because of an

unstable C1. His skull was fused to C2 and C3. There was a halo that followed

the surgery. I believe it was for three months.

I hope and pray the doctors figure a easy solution that makes it more

comfortable for Olivia.

I will be sending great energy and prayers your way!!

Olivia Update

Well , Olivias rods are not eroding through her ribs.

That’s the good news. The not so good news, is that her posterior

hardware (dual Veptr 2 attached to iliac crests) touches her right scapula

(shoulder blade), whi ch makes her not want to hold her shoulders back.

Her shoulders are rolling forward (for almost 3 years now), which is also

making her cervical vertebrae lean forward and that’s why the rods are

now so much more prominent. She has literally developed a shelf at the

top of the rods in back and the progression and leaning forward of her cervical

vertebrae, is quite concerning. The only way to address this that I am

aware of is fusion of segments in that area. I don’t want to sit

and watch this get worse, until we have no other course but to fuse, so I am

doing more research. I have just placed a call to her physical therapist,

in order to be proactive about this until we figure out what the best plan of

care for Olivia is, at this point. Does anyone out there have

experience/advice on this? I think this a common occurrence for children

with hardware of all types, but am not 100%......

Liz, I am so sorry we didn’t get to meet!

it was wonderful meeting you and your beautiful

family. Please let me know how the kiddos are doing after their edf cast

applications, yesterday.

Have a great weekend.
