Deadlines Extended to Apply to Attend March 23-24 Advanced Leadership & Advocacy Conference & for Support Funds

The deadlines have been extended to apply for the first annual Texas Advanced Leadership and Advocacy Conference (TALAC) which is scheduled March 23-24, 2009, in Austin. The conference will be conducted by the Texas A & M University’s Center on Disability and Development under a grant from the Texas Council for Developmental Disabilities.

There are two deadlines for the submitting the application.

-- The priority deadline is Dec. 1, 2008, and applications meeting this deadline will be considered first for supporting funds.

-- The final deadline is Jan. 5, 2009.

The application must be received (not just postmarked) by these dates.

Conference participants will learn ways to successfully promote and advocate for policy and systems change. They also will learn about current legislative issues and how to collaborate with local and statewide advocacy organizations.

Participation is limited to 100 individuals.

Participants will be selected by a committee, based on individual applications. People who are selected must pay a $70 registration fee to attend; however, a limited number of registration waivers are available based on evidence of financial need. Supporting funds are also available for two nights’ lodging at the conference hotel and up to $200 travel reimbursement for airfare or mileage for participants.

Individuals who would like to attend can access the full Application Packet,* at http://talac.tamu.edu or by request a copy in print. Participants will be selected by a conference committee. Priority will be given to individuals with a disability and family members.

* Individuals who have submitted the one-page application (which was contained in a conference flyer) will be asked to complete the full application packet. An application packet that can be completed online is being developed and should be ready in early December. In the meantime, people can submit the application by mail or fax.

Applicants must:

- Be at least 18 years old.

- Live in Texas.

- Have experience and interest in public policy advocacy and in assuming a leadership role in local community activities.

- For priority status, be an individual with a disability or a family member of a person with a disability (including, but not limited to: parent, grandparent, sibling, and/or spouse or domestic partner). Others may apply and will be considered on a “space available” basis.

More details on the conference and the application packet are online at http://talac.tamu.edu.
