amalgam fillings and insurance companies

Has anyone successfully challenged your dental insurance when they insist that you must pay extra out of pocket for a composite filling because amalgams are the standard that they are willing to pay for?

I find that to be wrong and it angers me, but I don't want to start up a battle that some of you have found through hard-won experience is impossible to win. I am on United Healthcare.
