Hi everyone!! I'm asking around to find out what's the best area or

county for children diagnosed with autism. If anyone has any

information on public schools, after school programs, doctors, etc. I

would greatly appreciate it. Thank you!! :)

it varies sooo much depending on your childs functioning level and the

types of services needed. there is no ideal placement in ga public

schools. some areas are better at spec need inclusion preschool, some

better at self contained " lower " functioning classrooms, etc.

it would be easier to direct you to particular areas if you tell us a

little bit about your childs level of functioning and the types of

service you are looking for. its also IEP season here and lots of

counties are trying new techniques, so many families have been

immeresed in that lately. hope this helps :)

In general, Fayette County schools (south of Atlanta - towns of Fayetteville, Peachtree City, Tyrone, , Woolsey and Inman) are good for both mainstreaming and self-contained options. My 4.5 year old boy will be in kindergarten next year, most likely self-contained at our neighborhood school, but we haven't had his IEP meeting yet. We have been very happy thus far with services received in two years of pre-K. Also, I was quite happy with the extended school year program he attended last year, too. I work from home, so I don't know about personally about after-school care. Two of the boys in my son's class do attend after care at a day care program near their school, and I haven't heard negatives about that from those parents. The only problem with Fayette County IMHO is the commute to other resources. You can find good dentists and general doctors down here who will work with your family, but getting to

developmental pediatricians, DAN docs (if you go that route), neurologists, other specialists, social groups, and some therapy options can require a long-ish drive (1 hour+ one way). BUT, Fayette and Coweta counties are growing rapidly, so more options are showing up within a 30 minute drive all the time. For example, I just found a 1-on-1 gymnastics teacher for my son here in Fayette, and I've been looking for over a year. We have a good private speech and OT clinic, but I haven't heard that there are any ABA specialist providers down here. Depends on what you want, I guess. Good luck! - mom to Bobby, age 4.5, dx "mild" autism at age 2, very sensory-seeking, talking more and more every day, and can spell his name!

You rock. That's why Blockbuster's offering you one month of Blockbuster Total Access, No Cost.
