Guest guest
Daphne, Have you tried natural antivirals? He may tolerate them better. I have read reports of parents saying their kids got as good of results as valtrex by using olive leaf extract. That is what we are doing and our boys are doing very well with it.Dana and Garrett, just turned 4, SCD 2 yearsCeliac, ASD, Speech and Motor Apraxia, sensory processing disorder Subject: Help, please! Valtrex and persistent croupy coughTo: mb12 valtrex Date: Sunday, August 17, 2008, 8:36 PM I'm wondering if anyone has had any experience with this:My 34-lb, 4-year-old son is on Day 20 of Valtrex 250 mg 2x/day and Diflucan 100 mg once/day. Shortly after starting Valtrex (~Day 3) he developed a croupy cough. (Two months prior to starting Valtrex; he had actual croup [fever, etc.] and a tough time losing the croup cough--he needed oral steroids to finally lose it.) Could Valtrex have stirred up the latent croup virus in him? The coughing is so bad now, that we are considering taking him off of the Valtrex/Diflucan, as I've read on the Valtrex site that a possible side effect of Valtrex is coughing. He coughs throughout the entire day and worse at bedtime. We took him to his ped last week and she said his chest, ears, nose, throat are totally clear. She wasn't concerned about it (?)A side note, he is currently battling a cutaneous staph infection on his legs. The fun never ends...Your thoughts are appreciated!Daphne
Guest guest
Hi, Dana Using OLE/Virastop was our next stop if the Valtrex trial wasn't successful. I just hate to cut the Valtrex trial short when I don't truly know if the Valtrex is causing the cough. But, I may have no choice as he simply can't go on coughing like this and the Valtrex start seems to coincide with the cough start. I am so glad you are seeing good things w/OLE, and no side effects is a definite plus! Daphne > > Daphne, > > Have you tried natural antivirals? He may tolerate them better. Guest guest
I wouldn't give up on antivirals, there are others to choose from. If you think the cough is a side effect of the Valtrex, switch to Acyclovir or Famvir. Valtrex is one of several you can use. Guest guest
Daphne, Well, I hadn't thought about a possible connection, but my son has been on Valtrex and Diflucan for about 6 weeks and two weeks ago, he developed a cough that sounds like chest congestion. Please let me know if you find anything else out on this. > > I'm wondering if anyone has had any experience with this: > > My 34-lb, 4-year-old son is on Day 20 of Valtrex 250 mg 2x/day and > Diflucan 100 mg once/day. Guest guest
, The cough may not be related to the Valtrex, as I have since read in medical articles, that there can be a link between Staphylococcus aureus and a serious type of croup (tracheitis). This might be a possibility for my son b/c he has a cutaneous staph infection right now. This may not be an issue for you, though. Good luck with your Valtrex trial.
