Guest guest
Also although it is rare, remember that some people have dumping type symptoms post op DS. The DS fixed my dumping symptoms. I have heard several people having these type reactions especially in the active weight loss phase and on occasion have had a few " spells " since my revision. Mostly after drinking a part of a Milkshake, and almost always on an empty stomach. Hypoglycemics react to sugar much like a diabetic and the diets are almost identical. Probably because they both restrict concentrated sweets. The liver likely is part of the culprit and could stabilize when the losses stabilize due to the glucagon and the livers part in glucose regulation. My biggest suggestion is to watch what she is eating in the 30 minutes to one or so hours before the occurrence. I had bad symptoms from both simple sugars but also carbs. Because carbs are easily converted to glucose. Eating your protein rich diet and limiting carbs and avoiding sugars sometimes helps but it is no guarantee. In the hospital we taught people to carry the decorator icing in their purse because that was a quick absorbed high glucose fix. It can be squeezed between the tongue and cheek if someone is unconscious. We also kept cheese and crackers or peanut butter and crackers for stabilizing them after the spell. If you eat something like pie, that will send insulin levels higher and if there is rapid gastric emptying then another drop. It can be a horrible cycle. I would feel exhausted and slept after meals because of the sugar problems. I completely understand the reasons that someone would be upset. Oh, and it is possible the emptying of the stomach is too fast, especially if they didn't do the sleeve gastrectomy. Some ds surgeons make the stomach more like a RNY, and lack of stoma can cause symptoms. I hope this all makes sense. Mel In a message dated 12/8/2008 1:25:58 P.M. Just follow the sugar with something high fiber or protein as soon as she is feeling a bit better. Keeping things handy like nuts to snack on between meals can prevent a crash. **************Make your life easier with all your friends, email, and favorite sites in one place. Try it now.
