Some folks become lactose intolerant after DS surgery. The first few

weeks after surgery your new system is healing and you should be

careful not stress it any more than it already is. After a few weeks

and healing has happened, go ahead and try adding back your milk. I

would advise that you do it when you have a couple days to dedicate

to sitting on the " throne " just in case you have a diarrhea reaction.

I personally have no problem with milk or milk products. Some folk

have a pretty intense reaction and some folks have milder

intolerances. So we will hope you fall into the same category as I

do and can continue to drink your milk.

If you do have a problem you can always give the lactaid type milks

or pills as it is an intolerance to the milk sugars that give folks a

problem.

I think folks that do develop a problem with milk after surgery was

probably at least pre-lactose intolerant before surgery. I've heard

that approx. 50% of people can't handle drinking milk after surgery.

The good news is that you have a 50% shot of getting to continue

Enjoying your milk!

I am one of the ones who definately cannot have milk now since the surgery.  I

do miss ice cream.  Other than that, I use soy milk in my cooking and with my

cereal.  I can't really say that I miss milk.  They make a lot of products

that are lactose free so there are ways to get around it.

Milk

When I saw Dr. K the other day I forgot to ask him a question that I wanted to

know about.  Somone told me that you cannot have milk for a certain period of

time after having the DS surgery.  Is that correct?  How long do you have to

go without having it?  What is the reasoning behind not being able to have it -

is it due to sugar?

I know it probably sounds like a weird question but I have always considered

milk to be a food group all by itself.  I can give up just about anything else

without batting an eyelash - but this one will be tough.  I'll due it - but I

might end up in AA for Milkaholics.

Hi, I am within days of being four years out and I drink milk by the

gallons. I eat all kinds of dairy products and have both before and after the

DS

without any problems. I came home from the hospital and tried the soy milk they

suggested, YUK!!! I started drinking my milk early on. I don't remember

exactly how soon, but within a few days of coming home. I have never had any

problems with it. Of course I haven't had any problems with any foods. I eat

bread, and everything. I have changed my eating habits from pre-DS, but by

choice,

in that I no longer eat lots of biscuits and gravy. It has no appeal for me.

I was never a ice cream eater, except for a small scoop now and then, and

that is the same. I think I am a healthier eater, in that I eat my protein

first, and quite often am full or mostly so, so I don't put a lot of other stuff

in that previously I would have. I do eat a lot though. Just good for me

stuff, and I have lost 170 plus pounds and feel great. I have lost more than I

weigh, so that makes me feel good. You will just have to see what works for

you.

We all do so differently. Just go easy and just because you can't handle it

at first doesn't mean you won't be able to farther down the line. Just make

sure you get the good stuff, like protein, in first. That and water will make

all the difference in the world. Good luck. Pearl

After the DS, drinking milk made me sick and nauseaus (sp?).

I still cant drink it straight, but I can have it on cereal or bananas or

It was only drinking milk that bothered me, the rest of milk products I have

no problem at all. cheese, yogurt, cottage cheese, sour cream (i cook with

that), cream in coffee, etc, have no adverse effect.

I have no idea why I cant drink it...but I dont actually miss it much.?

Funny how you get over the things you used to think you could NEVER do without!

The DS will change your life in many many ways, so, my advise: ?enjoy the

rollercoaster and let yourself explore the new tastebuds, new abilities, and

all sorts of new feelings and emotions.? Some good, some not so good, but ALL

of it was worth it...at least for me!

After any surgery or major dosing of antibiotics, all the micro organisms that

help you

digest are gone/dead. You need to put new micro organisms and live active

cultures back

into your gut. Mountain High & other quality yogurts are excellent for these.

Terri,

Welcome, hang on and enjoy the ride!

First, realize that what you enjoy now, you might not enjoy after

surgery. For some unknown reason our tastes change. Some

temporarily, and some permanently. That being said, I drank milk

before surgery with out any bad effects. Then after surgery Dr K

suggested to start adding milk back in my meals slowly. At first I

could not drink it. Why? Because the minute that first sip hit my

stomach, it started rumbling like Mt Vesuvius. Vicious rumblings

could be heard clear across the room, and the feeling of explosion

coming on....well lets just say I didn't try milk again for a while.

Even pudding did it. But little by little, the further out from

surgery I was, the more I could drink milk. Just so you know, I now

drink milk every day. In my protein shake, in other foods, or just by

itself.

It now has no adverse effects on me...
