August 15, 2008 Act Now!: Influence Policies Affecting Persons with AD/HD BEFORE Labor Day Dear CHADD Advocate, During August, we need you TAKE ACTION to ensure that Congress passes and President Bush signs into law important legislation for persons with AD/HD including the mental health parity legislation and the ADA Amendments Act. These crucial pieces of legislation will help to ensure that people with AD/HD do not experience discrimination in healthcare and employment. Contact your elected officials during the recess to show support for mental health parity legislation and the ADA Amendments Act. Town Meetings: Public appearances by members of Congress during the recess are a great venue for advocates to personally impress on them the importance of these two pieces of legislation. Call the local office of your Senator or Representative for updated information about where he or she will be meeting constituents. In 2008, because you made your voice heard, Congress has introduced or passed legislation to: Establish full Mental Health Insurance Parity Restore the intent of the Americans with Disabilities Act in the ADA Amendments Act Support young adults with serious forms of AD/HD in their transition to adulthood in the Healthy Transition Act Stop harmful Medicaid regulations from going into effect that would have limited a state's ability to fund important mental health care services Get incarcerated individuals with AD/HD help through the Mentally Ill Offender Treatment and Crime Reduction Reauthorization and Improvement Act Help parents of students with AD/HD recover expert witness legal fees in the IDEA Fairness Restoration Act Stop Abuse in Residential Programs for Teens Act Improve and reauthorize the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Act As your voice on Capitol Hill, the CHADD Public Policy team also represented your student with AD/HD by commenting on changes to: No Child Left Behind Act and...
