When Fluffy Has The Flu - Special Needs For Your Special Friend By Bruce Maul

Our pets are part of the family, and need love and attention. When Fluffy is sick, she requires a lot more love, attention, and patience. But the life-long contract has its own benefits, not the least of which are the snuggles and nuzzles of a healthy, happy animal. Whether your friend needs to be monitored regularly for a serious condition, grows more grey in the muzzle, or merely has sniffles and wheezes, an illness brings unique challenges to your routine. It is also an opportunity to strengthen your bond as you learn to communicate with each other. Although animals understand commands, and can read your mood by the tone and inflection of your voice, they do not speak English (or Indonesian, or Russian.) Unless your occupation is pet psychic, you probably do not speak Dog or Cat. When there is a language barrier, any communication is important. The main way we connect with animals is through touch-that is why we call them "pets". From the furry lap warmer to the parroting bird, we show our affection by brushing and stroking. (And, of course, the food bowl!) When our friends are sick, we need to spend more time with them. This sounds like common sense, but Fido may not feel well enough for belly scratches. Fluffy has even less enthusiasm-when a cat is sick, its first instinct is to hide. Do not take it personally-your pet still loves you. Try to coax him out with his favorite toy, scratches, or treats several times a day. Even if he does not want to play, five minutes of your attention here and there will show you care. Make a schedule. This is so important with our busy lifestyles. Keep track of veterinary appointments, medicines, and exercise--just as you would any other member of the family. Fido or Fluffy can get lost in the shuffle of daily activities. Become aware of you pet's idiosyncrasies. Study his language by noting how he reacts to his environment. The wagging tail means happiness, but what does it mean when he looks to the side with a high squeal? He could be saying he missed you, or he could be in pain from an ear infection. The better you know your pet, the more you will trust the inner voice when it urges a trip to the vet. Be patient--both your pet and your family must adjust to the challenges. Set an alarm if you keep forgetting the 10:00 a.m. pill. It takes time, but eventually you will learn to recognize the special whine that means your friend needs help up the stairs or outside. Above all, do not feel guilty if you forget something. Fluffy may be an angel, but you are only human. Be flexible. If your pet is having difficulty at dinner, move the food and water bowls to a more convenient spot. When the animal is suffering from arthritis, glaucoma, or other medical conditions of advanced age or individual breed, an elevated food bowl could make chow time more enjoyable. And a nice, soft bed in his favorite spot may not be convenient when you vacuum, but your pet will appreciate that you have taken time to accommodate his special needs. When your pet is sick, it may bring challenges to your family, but it also an opportunity to get to know your friend on a deeper level. A few changes to your schedule and more time and attention are required. However, when Fido and Fluffy are on the mend, they will express gratitude in the universal language of love-more hugs and kisses for their special human friend. ======== This article has been submitted in affiliation with http://www.PetLovers.Com/ which is a site for Pets.
