Guest guest
Hi there. I am the mom of three kiddos. My oldest has Tourette's, ADHD and a few OCD-like behaviors, my 5 year old daughter has been diagnosed with OCD and ODD and my youngest who is four has not been dx with anything as of yet. I have run an emotional marathon with my oldest and his school. He is classified Spec Ed under OHI with his TS and I STILL fight every week for him to receive what he needs. He is bright and that is what makes it difficult for the teachers to follow accomodations. His executive function is virtually nonexistant and he has no ability ot stay on task whatsoever (gotta love the ADHD!!). I even had a teacher accuse him of copying and pasting on an assignment he typed (one of his accomodations!!!).ARGH I have requested a STAT meeting for my 5 y/o who is in kindergarten, but her teacher is on maternity leave (with her OCD, you can just imaging how hard that has been) so they are holding off until she returns to class. I am literally petrified of the next years with her. It was really hard to get what accomodations I could for a TS/ADHD kid. How hard will it be for a child with OCD? Has anyone been through this at the early kinder age? How did they classify your kids? I need ammunition because the school already seriously dislikes me (a sad by-product of being an advocate for your child). Any guidance you can share would be very appreciated!! Guest guest
Hi , My son's OCD didn't begin until 6th grade. But what you will have to do is be able to show how/where her OCD is affecting her regarding school (writing, reading, able to do work/homework, slowing her down, lunchroom problems, classroom problems...). Then you come up with the accommodation or modification to help out in each area. So if you don't yet have any specifics, you may have to just " wait and see " how things go at school. I believe most kids with an IEP are classified under OHI. We didn't get an IEP for my son, were able to do well with just a 504 Plan. Have you heard of 504's? Though with the ODD, she would probably fair better with the IEP. My son was in gifted/advanced classes. In the FILES section of this group, there is some document about the role of school personnel regarding OCD. (don't recall the exact title) There's good info in it. Also the OCD Foundation has info for schools, I believe. Hope this helps a little bit. , 19, with OCD, dysgraphia and Aspergers/mild > > Hi there. > I am the mom of three kiddos. Guest guest
Oh I love those special teachers! Well she sounds like she would be willing to work with you. So she probably will be willing to get something " official " set up to help your daughter for next year's teacher. Until she's back, guess you can write down anything you think of where she may accommodate your daughter. (I just say that because *I* have to write things down or later I'll draw a blank at those critical meetings!) Look for that file regarding school in our FILES section of the group. I think it covers things pretty well. I think I have some other school info saved, but on my " other " computer that I'm not on now! So just post if you'd like for me/others to share any sites/info we've found useful over the years. > > Thanks! > I am trying to avoid the " wait and see " approach because it killed us with my oldest. He was under 504, originally, but they switched him to Spec Ed this year. Took me 2 years to get him classified under 504!!! So I am dealing with IEPs right now with my
