Guest guest
Hey, I just want to know if you have tried any oral steroids as part of your diarrhea problem? I have just had a dose pack of dexamethasone as a trial for the numbness in my fingers. I have not had a decrease in my numbness at all, but as an interesting side effect, My diarrhea has absolutely disappeared. I have almost normal, almost constipated sometimes, BMs. As a matter of fact, I ate some spinach dip and sausage balls with no explosive diarrhea. As spunach dip is a lot of mayo and sour cream, I figured at least some diarrhea, But had slightly softer bm (dare I say normal?) with oil in the water. OMG, it has been so long since I saw the oil slicks, Usually having the pudding to watery diarrhea. I don't know how long this will last but wonder if this might be a sign tha there is an inflammatory process happening that isn't part of the ds experience? As a side note. I have a friend who has not had weight loss surgery. She has recently been diagnosed with sarcoidosis. Like me she has had a huge problem with diarrhea that worsened after her GB was removed. (My mother had diarrhea and always blamed it on her GB being gone so I assumed it was the same for me. ) So when they put her on oral prednisone, I was shocked to get a phone call wanting to know what was the natural remedy for constipation! So Maybe she was IBS also?? Maybe not so much the ds but maybe inflammation from the loss of the GB, or just plain old IBS? Any thought are appreciated Mel. **************One site keeps you connected to all your email: AOL Mail, Gmail, and Yahoo Mail. Try it now. Guest guest
Mel I want to thank you for bringing up the relationship with GB removal and IBS. Never knew there may be a correlation between IBS and GB. The next time I go to my PCP, I will bring this up. To a Doctor, this is probably so obvious, it could be overlooked. Before my DS, I suffered with IBS, but afterwards, OMG. I now wear Depends as I can't make it to the restroom, even if it is next to me. As a matter of fact, I have been checking out going on permanent disability as I can't control it. When I go back to my PCP I am definitely going to ask about prednisone and dexamethasone. Anything to help with the uncontrollable IBS. Mel, thank you again for this info to folks like me, this info is worth its weight in gold. Guest guest
The oproblem is that if the problem responds to prednisone, The side effects are so bad that a doc prescribing it long term are practically nil. It will be interesting how long my bowels will be " normal " . As yesterday was my last dose. Although if my tests come back like I suspect, I may have to go on it for a longer period. We will see...... Mel In a message dated 12/22/2008 12:39:07 P.M. Central Standard Time, lkornoff@... writes: When I go back to my PCP I am definitely going to ask about prednisone and dexamethasone. Guest guest
Mel.. Sorry for taking so long to respond. I have not taken any oral steroids. I tried to get the doctor recently to prescribe some as an aggressive treatment for the lichens sclerosa (recommended treatment in the handout the doctor at my clinic gave me)... but they refused. It would have been nice to see what it would have done. I am much much better, but it has taken me a couple of months to get here. It has been a very hard fall with the kids and I have been distressed almost beyond my capabilities. Finally, I have pretty much resolved that I will just be as good a mother as I can be... and the rest is in God's hands. Things are better here... and I am better both physically and emotionally. In our last town I was involved in everything, but here I am involved in very little. Partly that depresses me, but then I have less to distress me because I have few commitments here. Christmas was pretty good. It can be a difficult time for adopted children, and it was for our Kayla... but all in all it was a good day. I do think next year that I will focus more on the kids giving rather than just receiving. We usually do more -- like with a giving tree, but I just didn't get it together this year. As always, Bobbe was so thoughtful with my kids again. They have no Grandparents, so it is such a delight for them when they get their card and gift from Bobbe. You are such a delight Bobbe to my family, Bobbe. Much love in this holiday season to you all. A belated Merry Christmas, and may 2009 bring you happiness and health! Guest guest
Why do they resist oral steroids? At least a dose pack at the worst. My pain docs usually allow me one or two a year. I know they are bad stuff, but given the alternative, the side effects for a short period would not be horrible. FYI, My diarrhea has returned. Christmas or the dose pack ended? Guest guest
Elle, One other thing....If the illness you described is autoimmune, any autoimmune problems are exacerbated with stress. I do know IBS is made lots worse with stress. Try to relax as much as possible with the kids. I know how it is to deal with kids and no grandparents. Both mine and Toms momma's died when they were 5 and 3 yrs old. Not only is it harder at Christmas and holidays but you also have no one to take the kids and give you a rest. Your amazing to take in those kids. I know I couldn't do it. Mel In a message dated 12/27/2008 7:40:47 P.M.
