Depression-More than just the blues. Can be precipitated by a grief event. Research has shown that depressed people have imbalances of neurotransmitters in the brain. Symptoms of depression include profound sadness, feelings of hopelessness, poor concentration, tearfulness, sleep disturbance including insomnia, early morning wakening and sleeping too long, decreased or increased appetite, fatigue, and loss of pleasure in normally pleasurable activities. Can be caused by a number of different medical conditions including hypothyroidism, Cushings and s diseases, infections, autoimmune diseases, neurological conditions, sleep apnea, Vitamin B3 and Vitamin B12 deficiencies, brain and pancreatic tumors as well as by a number of medications including birth control pills, reserpine, sedatives, tranquilizers, and alcohol. It is important to treat any other condition or discontinue medications before starting any antidepressant agents. With depression, some type of psychological therapy is very important and assists with medicine or herbal treatment. Dealing with any emotional issues that may be contributing to or made worse by the depression will give a better response. St. 's Wort-Shown in a number of European studies to be as effective as tricyclic antidepressant drugs with fewer side effects.
