Strontium

Also known as: Sr

Description

Strontium is a Micromineral. It has not yet been established whether

small amounts of Strontium are essential to humans or not.

Health Benefits of Strontium

Detoxification

Supplemental trace amounts of Strontium may prevent the absorption

of radioactive Strontium-90. [more info]

Musculoskeletal System

Strontium may help to improve the cell structure and mineral

matrix of the Bones. [more info]

Strontium may stimulate the production of Cartilage. references

Strontium may be an effective treatment for Osteoarthritis (due to

its ability to stimulate the production of Cartilage). references

Carbohydrates

Alginates may facilitate the excretion of excessive Strontium.

Dietary Sources of Strontium

Strontium is generally found in trace amounts in all foods - the

content of individual foods varies in accordance with the soil content

of the area in which the foods are harvested.

The highest sources of Strontium for humans are from Sea

Vegetables and Sea Water.

Toxic Effects of Excessive Strontium

Minerals

Excessive consumption of Strontium may cause the excretion of

Calcium from the Bones (Strontium's chemical structure is very similar

to that of Calcium).

These Substances may Interfere with Strontium

Minerals

Calcium may interfere with the absorption of Strontium as Calcium

and Strontium compete with each other for absorption. Therefore persons

using Strontium for therapeutic purposes should not consume Calcium

supplements (or high-Calcium meals) at the same time as Strontium.

Human Strontium Ingestion and Therapeutic Dosages

The average human body contains 300 - 350 mg of Strontium at any

given time (and this Strontium is concentrated mostly in the Bones and

Teeth).

The average human intake of Strontium is 2 mg per day.

Clinical studies using supplemental Strontium for the

prevention/treatment of Osteoporosis have involved the use of 700 mg of

elemental Strontium per day.

Bioavailability

20% - 40% of dietary Strontium is absorbed by the body and

excessive intake of Strontium is excreted via the feces.

Forms of Strontium

Strontium Carbonate consists of 59.3% elemental Strontium bound to

40.7% Carbonate.

Strontium Chloride

Strontium Citrate consists of 30% elemental Strontium bound to 70%

Citric Acid.

Strontium Gluconate

Strontium Lactate

Strontium Ranelate is composed of 34% Strontium combined with 66%

Ranelic Acid. Strontium Ranelate was developed in order to make

Strontium patentable. It is not superior to other forms of supplemental

Strontium. This is the form used in the Pharmaceutical Drug product,

Protos.

Strontium-90 is a (toxic) Radioisotope of Strontium.

Commercial Availability of Strontium

Oral Products

Strontium is available from some internet-based suppliers in the

form of:

- 565 mg capsules (containing 175 mg elemental Strontium from

Strontium Citrate)

- 756 mg capsules (containing 227 mg elemental Strontium from

Strontium Citrate)

- 340 mg capsules (Strontium Carbonate)
