Does anyone's child do this? My 13-yr-old sniffs during transitions

from one activity to another. If she gets up from the dinner table, she

sniffs before heading upstairs. She packs up her bookbag, then sniffs

before heading out the door. At first, I thought we need to do a better

job of treating her allergies but we are doing a good job treating her

allergies. She sniffs when there's nothing to sniff! It is driving me

nuts!

It is not exactly the same thing, but I can surely relate to how

irritating it can be. May daughter constantly clears her throat - it

has been better lately, but we took her to doctors for asthma,

allergies, you name it until everybody finally concluded it was a

vocal tic. She would do it all day in school as well, mainly when she

was not as busy, such as reading or watching tv. Drove everybody

bananas! Some people say that OCD and tics are kind of the same

thing, or that they are hard to differentiate. Another thing she does

when she is settling down to sleep is burp! She purposely burps

repeatedly...annoying!

Hi Dianne

Do you think your daughter may have tourette syndrome? The things

you are describing are things that Touretter's describe. Most people

think of swearing when they hear the word tourette's but actually

that is in a very small % of the tourette population. Most

Touretter's actually talk about this very thing you are talking

about. Some children do have transiet tics but to classify a tic as

part of tourette's, the tics must be present for atleast 1 year.

They can vary from tic to tic but continuous for 1 year.

If you need more info on TS to help you figure this out check out

latitudes.org on the tourette forum. This is an alternative

treatment website but soooo very helpful! OCD is also a big part of

many touretter's.

Good luck....there are many natural things you can do for OCD and TS

that can greatly reduce the symptoms of these conditions. My son

also suffer's from TS (tics and ocd) and he is tic free I would say

95% of the time. Check out my website www.smallchanges.info there

are many things to get you started on the road to fewer symptoms. I

would immediately start a food elimination program this alone can

improve symptoms up to 75% we were diligent in our efforts for 3

months (only whole foods)(took out all food sensitivities) straight

until we understood our son's sensitivities....Those 3 months changed

our lives!!!

I'm happy to help with anything you may have questions on.

Vitamins that help: Calcium/Magnesium 2:1 ratio Tic reducer

Omega 3*6*9 (brain function)

Taurine is also a tic reducer

Make sure your vitamins/supplements are free of preservatives, dyes,

flavors, etc.

Hi ,

Thanks for your note. I will go and check out the sites that you

mentioned. I am aware of Tourette's, but I don't think she " qualifies

" for the disorder. She does have tics, such as throat clearing and

eye blinking, but so far they have not been debilitating. The throat

clearing was the worst, but it seems to have calmed down. I stay very

aware though, and watch for other things that might show up.

I have not delved into food sensitivities, etc. We ave had such a

hard time just getting her to eat, especially since she is on ADHD

medication that for now, my goal is to keep her from losing more

weight. We have always been health conscious with our food. We have

been vegetarians for many years (my girls, their whole lives!) and

have always limited processed foods and junk foods, although it is a

constant battle!

Thanks again!

My youngest son had this throat-noise thing for quite

some time. Mostly during TV watching and quiet times,

at least that's when I noticed. He also went through a

spitting phase, but may have been copying his OCD

brother. Anyway, I chose to ignore these behaviors

lest he think it was a good way to get my attention.

Lo and behold, they disappeared in short order!

I also recall as a child having this weird thing with

raising my upper lip to meet my nose. There was a

period during which I couldn't seem to help it, no

matter how embarrassed I felt. Another time my mother

took me to the eye doc because I couldn't stop

blinking. Guess what. I don't have either of these

problems today, and never got an OCD diagnosis.

So, if your daughter already has a diagnosis, you

might just ignore the above. If not, give it some time

and see if it goes away on its own.
