Guest guest
, My wife and I had the same suspicions for our 26 month old son just before he turned two. We got him in to see Dr. Young here in Macon and she diagnosed him with mild/moderate ASD. We struggled with the diagnosis and considered getting a second opinion but decided not to do so. Some of the places we were considering were the Marcus Institute (http://www.marcus.org/), Vanderbilt's TRIAD center (http://kc.vanderbilt.edu/kennedy/triad/). A great link to find a place to have the assessment done is the following: http://www.autismspeaks.org/community/fsdb/category.php?sid=13 & cid=1 Good luck, Mike Randolph > I believe my son may be autistic I need help finding a Pediatric > Neurologist in the Atlanta/Macon area. Guest guest
We too use Dr. Young here in Macon. Her office staff is wonderful, she is wonderful, and she diagnosed our son with mild autism when he was 3 . . . he is now 6. We still love her office and would recommend it to anyone. Guest guest
A developmental pediatrician is really where you need to be headed... Dr. Rubin in Atlanta is very well respected, as is the woman mentioned from the Macon area... I believe she interned with Dr. Rubin.. You could also refer yourself to Babies Can't Wait, the state's Early Intervention Program for some services. They cannot do everything, but they may be able to get you started with some basic services. They will probably NOT diagnose autism, but can work on things like speech, sensory processing issues, occupational therapy, and so forth, or at least evaluate your child to see if there are developmental delays... A good book to look at is " Could it be Autism? " I also liked Eating an Artichoke - by Echo Fling. It made the whole getting into the autism mode much more palatable for me... It was hard because we were trying to deal with having 2 children diagnosed... Any of the Videos by n Joiner are also very helpful if you get a diagnosis.... Her videos can be found on tmcforautism.org And you can catch her on utube. She is a local (GA) woman who is an autism expert. I have found her information very, very helpful on my autism journey... Best wishes to all of you, P. > > I believe my son may be autistic I need help finding a Pediatric > > Neurologist in the Atlanta/Macon area. He's 27 months and saying a few > > words. Guest guest
As much as I love Dr. Rubin (he was the first to diagnose our daughter) I did want to point out that he does not take a biomedical approach at all and is also completely pro vaccine. Now that I have seen a developmental pediatrician that looks at all aspects including biomedical I feel like we really missed the boat when she was initially diagnosed at 2 1/2. For example, her viral load from the MMR vaccine is sky high and we are not using antivirals to bring down her viral load (she is almost 6 now - if we had known at 2 1/2 we could have done something so much sooner). Also, she has mercury and lead toxicity which he did not suggest looking at at all.
Guest guest
Where would one start on the biomedical approach ? We to are fairly new. Guest guest
his veiws may be changing some...we have used him since my son was 2.5, now 7.5yo. he has seen the progress he has made and we tell him what we do. he also knows we dont vaccinate anymore. for the past 3visits, he has said, " keep up whatever you are doing b/c its working " . thats siad, i dont think he tells new families (YET) to try alternative methods...but he no longer dismisses them for thsoe of us who do them. > > As much as I love Dr. Rubin (he was the first to diagnose our daughter) I did want to point out that he does not take a biomedical approach at all and is also completely pro vaccine. Guest guest
My son is now 3 1/2 years old and we do have an appointment on the books for an initial appointment with Dr. Rubin in Atlanta. I am unsure about attending the appointment based on many things I have heard about not getting much from an expensive appointment with Dr. Rubin. What do you think? We are working with Dorfman, Nutritionist with supplements, checking his yeast levels, and have had him on the GFCF diet now since May 2008....the diet brought great changes for the positive for him....we also have him and his twin brother in the preschool special needs program due to their language delay....the teachers in Towns County are wonderful working with us as we are living in Hiawassee, GA now on a temporary basis before moving back to Atlanta within a year or so....Anyway, I don't want to spend money if not necessary or helpful to my son...We have also attended the Son-Rise Program in MASS to start a home based program for him....We are working hard to bring about early changes for him as you all are with your children so any helpful words of wisdom would be appreciated... Guest guest
Thanks for the update on Dr. Rubin. He is really an excellent doctor and I don't want to discourage anyone from seeing him. As far as who is the best I really don't know. We are happy with Dr. Nathason-Lippitt who definitely has a biomedical slant to being a developmental pediatrician. She is not anti vaccine but definitely thinks a different schedule should be followed as well as recommends splitting up MMR (Measeles then
Guest guest
Dr. Rubin is good to get a solid diagnosis – especially for the milder children that might otherwise slip through the cracks. He diagnosed my HFA and my moderate/severe child who is now just moderate. That is all I met with my post. I never met he was an all in one shop for services. I feel like parents need to make informed decisions based on their preferences for treatment of their children once they have read and researched treatment options after diagnosis. Everyone has preferences as to what treatment options they want for their child – whether that is traditional therapies like OT/PT/Speech, or alternative diets, HBOT, NAET, vitamins, or whatever. I hope this clarification helps. Regards, W.P.
Guest guest
Hi there - we recently went to Dr. Duke in Macon. She is a board certified pediatrician, specializes in ADD/ADHD and follows the DAN protocal. I felt very comfortable with her. WOuld be a great place to start. All self-pay, but you can process through insurance on your own. > > I believe my son may be autistic I need help finding a Pediatric > Neurologist in the Atlanta/Macon area.
