Guest guest
Well, Kristy, thanks for sharing the good news! Yes, it is a very good warning to us to be sure to supplement as directed by our physicians. This is serious business and not minding it can have severe consequences for us and our offspring (although not mine!). You are very fortunate. I thought he could see because of the look on his face, funny, huh? Marta
Guest guest
Holy crap! I'm glad 'someone upstairs' was looking out for both of you and Bodhi wasn't permanently impacted and your levels are now improving. That's definitely a wake up call and I'm very glad its something that didn't cause permanent damage to either one of you. *hugs* Anita > > Well, heres the update on Bodhi and the Vitamin A deficiency the DS and I > passed on to him: > > Today we went to Brisbane to see a pediatric ophthalmologist from the Royal > Children's Hospital. Guest guest
I take a lot of supplements but not ADEKS. Why do people choose those over regular vits? I never understood that. I am so glad all is ok with Bodhi. I know how scary that must have been- we worry about our babies 24/7. V- mjs93311 wrote: Well, Kristy, thanks for sharing the good news! We do not choose to take them, but when our a d e and k are low Dr K tells us to start taking them. hth Sharon in Onyx who takes them and her vits and calcium with D and an added c, and biotin, and folic acid...and you get the idea
Guest guest
really? So even if you are compliant, you can still need these? WOW- I already take 2 iron tablets, 2 folic acid, 2000 mg calcium and 2 multi's a day. SHEESH!!! Hopefully I wont have to take more than that but I sure will if I need to. I am almost 5 years out and I guess I was ignornant in thinking that being compliant would alleviate any deficiencies. Scary because I have seen what people have gone through with these issues- like CIndee. Very frightening to me especially when I work really hard to be compliant. thanks sharon V- roseofsharon_ps121 wrote: > > I take a lot of supplements but not ADEKS. Guest guest
It's good to remember: we cannot overdose on vitamins because of our diminished absorption. Always better to take more and have the doc tell us to cut back, than to take too little and then be forced to play catch-up. Right, Dee??? Bobbe in Paso. 285=24. 3/03. 167=16. Guest guest
THANK GOD FOR ANSWERING THIS PRAYER! Probably your vitamin A didn't TANK until the last of your pregnancy and Bodhi was able to Rob all he needed from you through most of the 9 months. Perhaps Bodhi knew exactly what he was doing coming a few days early so he could get himself so Vitamin A! Resourseful child! Guest guest
--- So even if you are compliant, you can still need these? ======================================= Yes...even if you are compliant you could still need to add ADEKs. That is why being compliant includes our yearly labs...so we may Tweek our vitamins according to our ever changing needs. Vitamins A, D, E and K are Fat soluable. We mal-absorb Fat therfore these are the vitamins we have the most difficulty absorbing. The Vitamin ADEKs is in a water miscuble form. Meaning it is coated in a way that tricks the body into absorbing it better. We can also take individual vitamins like A or D as long as it is in a " DRY " form. The label needs to say " Dry " or " Allergy " on it. Hugs Jo
Guest guest
Kristy, I do not post often, but I had to chime in here and say THANK YOU GOD! I have been on pins and needles waiting to hear an update on your precious (and I mean that with everything inside me) baby boy. There are no words to describe the fear that grips your heart when there is an inkling that you did something (unintentionally, mind you) to harm your child. When I was pregnant with Kenna, the nurse line got a hold of the amount of dry A & D I was taking and about had a fit telling me that I was harming my child and that my baby would more than likely have birth defects due to MY choice. You can imagine my fear and I called Dee beside myself. She tried to reassure me that as a DS patient, it would be really hard to OD on Vit A, but she went ahead and ordered my labs. They came back perfect and obviously Kenna has no problems outside of the normal colds and flus here and there. I hope you continue to mend and get that Vit A back in the black. I wish you so much happieness with your new baby. Thanks for posting that video clip. It was incredible to see your family in action. As an aside, isn't it AWESOME how child birth induces weightloss? I am the smallest I have ever been and that is after TWO post-DS pregnancies. My stomach is as flat as ever and I am happily wearing 10's. WOO! Best of luck and take good care. In fact I just told that exact thing to my mom last week. Even with taking MORE than recommended I've never had to decrease anything but I have had to UP some vitamins. I am a total believer in taking extra and being diligent in getting our labs done..so we may tweak our vitamin intake BEFORE we get into serious trouble. Guest guest
Thanks Liz, Jo, Marta and everyone else for your kind thoughts. It certainly is complicated being pregnant and post-op DS - as Liz found out with that nurse advising against taking Vit A!! Someone could write a book on pregnancy following WLS (just not me!!). Had a horror 2 days with Bodhi crying - attributed it to a growth spurt. Today he is back to being an angel. Last night he slept in his crib from 7.30pm-11pm and then again from 1am to 4.15am . It was a blessing. It is 12.30pm now and he is in his cot having another nap. Man...why didn't anyone tell me having a newborn is exhausting! lol. I was confused that my Vitamin D levels were high yet he was telling me to continue to increase. After talking to him, I decided that with fat soluble vitamins, we as DS patients are very unlikely to OD on any of them. Dr K explained to me that it would be very hard for us to take enough fat soluble vitamins to become toxic. So as far as adeks, I would think all of them are the same. I would rather be safe than sorry. Mel **************Start the year off right. Guest guest
Mel, My Vit A were normal, but my beta carotene was low so I figure my body was converting all it could get into A. I started taking more beta carotene again. I had switched around my A and beta carotene last year. Marta As for the Vitamin A thing.
