Monsanto a Focus of US Antitrust Investigation

The Justice Department is conducting an antitrust investigation of the US seed industry, and Monsanto is its main focus. They are trying to determine whether or not Monsanto Co. has violated antitrust rules in their attempt to expand its control of the industry with genetically engineered crops.

A large target of the criticism has been the company's marketing tactics, according to company spokesman Lee Quarles.

Rivals of Monsanto have alleged that the company uses its licensing agreements to squeeze competitors and gain leverage over smaller seed companies. Monsanto has of course denied these allegations.
