Flying out of Fresno

Hi all,

I had my DS in Delano on January 15 and flew home to Washington state

out of the Fresno airport yesterday. Here's a word of caution for

those scheduling surgery in the near future and thinking of flying in

and out of Fresno. We had rented a car at the airport, so Thursday

morning drove to the rental return lot to find a big deserted parking

lot in the middle of a construction zone with no attendants, no

shuttles, no shelters, no directional signs, no people - just some

signs to mark the rows for various rental companies. We couldn't

even see where the terminal was (it was still dark, of course). We

had five large heavy pieces of luggage and my hubby has a bad back

condition and just cannot carry luggage. Some passing workmen

finally pointed us in the direction of the terminal, but no help was

available anywhere. I hooked the two smaller suitcases together and

pulled them while Vic wrestled with the other three as best he could

as we schlepped all those bags for the long walk to the terminal.

Once inside, there was again no help, no person visible and the

luggage cart rental thing was out of order! We pulled and wrestled

the bags another very long ways to the furthest (of course!) car

rental counter where the attendant told us she was sorry but she had

no way to call for any help for us. I stood leaning on her counter

while Vic scoured the terminal and finally found an abandoned wheel

chair in a corner somewhere and another luggage cart rental deal that

actually worked. From there he had to alternate between pushing me

and pushing the luggage cart, running back and forth between us,

clear through the terminal building to the furthest (of course,

again!) airline ticket counter. Once we arrived at the ticket

counter the airline personnel were helpful and assigned us a skycap

to help negotiate the security and boarding process. If you are

planning to rent a car and fly in and out of Fresno, please be

prepared for a very rigorous and exhausting experience 10 days post-

surgery in negotiating the rental car return at the airport! I don't

know what the construction project is that is going on or when it

will be finished, but the rental agent told us that when it is done

the walk to the terminal is going to be even longer and that they

have no plans for adding shuttles. Oy! How consumer friendly can

you get? Hope this proves helpful to some who may be considering how

to get into and out of Delano from out of town.

Although it was an ordeal...You made it home! yippeeeeee! Now you can

get busy with the real business of getting thinner and HEALTHIER! Then

if you come back to Delano for follow-ups and you have the same problem

at Fresno Airport it will be just like me dashing 1/2 way up a flight

of stairs and it dawning on me that Stairs were no longer a dreadful

challenge. A long hike in a parking lot wheeling along STACKED luggage

in each hand will be a piece of cake!

Hi Jo,

Yes, I know. I didn't write that to whine - honestly!! - I just

thought someone making travel plans might find it good to know. I am

SO happy to be back home healing, feeling GOOD (much better than I

had expected I'd be feeling at this point!), sleeping in my own bed,

with the DS behind me and already 10 lbs. thinner, I told my hubby I

can hardly keep a big grin from breaking out on my face 24/7. As a

matter of fact, I am fairly ecstatic right now! It really and truly

is the start of a whole new life!!

Luv ya,

Glad you're home and even for people that aren't new post-ops, its

great information! Just because I'm in good health, it doesn't mean I

want to be wandering around the airport blindly, toting my luggage

from one side of the airport to another, etc. As someone that might

be planning to use Fresno as a new post-op, its definitely great to

know as that's more of a huge obstacle than an annoying inconvenience

it would be for others.

*hugs*

Yuck. Thanks for the warning. I just flew to Michigan and back. The

good thing was that it was actually easier at that tiny airport. I

dropped the car off feet from the front door. The bad thing was I

missed the driveway in the blowing snow. Got it right the second time.

Hoo boy, speaking of blowing, we have got ourselves a wind tonight!

I didn't take it as whining. I took it exactly as you

intended..Informative. I was just pointing out the Fabulous changes

headed your way that makes dealing with life's little hurdles

sooooooo much easier.

Keep your joyful spirit going...it's infectious!

Actually, I was just thinking the same thing. Bakersfield is a

2-terminal airport (very small) and the rental cars are right out the

side door. It would be very convenient too, cuz it's right close to

Hwy 99 and you could get to Delano in about 30 minutes.

Jolene in Bakersfield

Slowly falling in love with her DS!

-53 lbs in 2 months and 6 days!!!!
