Guest guest
Thought I would drop a note to say hello! I starting taking 50,000 D3 and 3000 calcium on the 24th of January. It has been difficult to get all that calcium spread out during the day. I saw the endocronologist on the 31st of January at the Naval Hospital. After about 45 minutes with the intern, taking down every piece of family medical history, every ache and pain I ever had in my life, etc., I got to meet the actual doctor. It was a weird meeting. He talked about a lot, but kept pausing and asking me " are you SURE no one in your family has ever had bone problems? you are SURE no one has ever had any problems with calcium? " . Then he talked about more things and paused to ask again. That kept happening. " YES I am sure " was my answer. He asked me about the prescription that Dee had sent me in the mail for the D3 and Calcium. He decided that I should follow that regemin and have my blood drawn again in 4 weeks. He then said that the problem he was worried about had nothing to do with the DS surgery at all. He said the lab results in my records as far back as 1998 showed a problem. Then, he asked me again " are you SURE there is no history of bone or calcium problems in your family? " and " Didnt any of your doctors ever tell you of a problem with bloodwork before? " . NO....nobody said anything, ever. I was told I was borderline anemic a couple times. I was told I had high cholesterol readings when I was a pre-teen once. But...nobody told me anything else. He told me to try calling all my relatives and ask again. Then he got a bit.....well....cagey. He kind of leaned back and said something a bit unintelligible about a rare problem with D something....and quickly said " well, lets just wait for the next blood test results to see if the prescribed D3 and calcium changes 'it' and go from there. He said, it wasnt the DS surgery that caused the problem, but maybe the mega amounts of supplements will effect it enough that it will not need to be addressed. Then he had me open my mouth just a bit and keep my head at a particular angle....and he tapped on my jaw joints. After a few tries, he sat back and said 'well, that is a good sign'. (HUH???) I couldnt stand it, had to ask him what the heck that meant! He said that normally if things were 'progressed,' he would have seen my lip twitch when tapping on my jaw like that. (right. hmmm...) Then he said to just continue my supplements as ordered, come back to the lab in four weeks to have the test, and he would be in touch when the results came in. He said the test would be a blood and urine test. He sent me home with a specimen bottle (has to be the 2nd first pee of the day) and a card with his number. So, basically I left there feeling confused and a bit freaked out. Researching problems associated with vit D deficiencies can be very distressing. My mom and I have been searching the internet and coming up with all sorts of things. Among them, Multiple Sclerosis, depression, diabetes, chronic pain (fibromyalgia), Cohn's disease, psoriasis, migraine headaches, etc, etc, etc,. As well as information about women who are deficient in vit D during pregnancy having babies with some form of Autism. (very disturbing. especially since I have been told that two out of my five children show mild signs of Autism!) so...I suck down, gag down, all these pills and supplements and in a couple weeks have the test. THEN he will tell me whatever it is he is finding. The fact that this problem was apparent before DS surgery, and possibly as a child, really ticks me off. Why didnt any of the previous doctors tell me anything? oh well. cant be too bad. I am still alive and kickin!! LOL!! meanwhile, I go to my physical therapy two to three times a week and deal with the different pains as usual. I go to school two days a week, with a new class starting at the end of March. I think it is becoming a waste of time to go to college. I need a skill that is employable! very frustrating. Since I no longer get state disability and cant qualify for federal disability (was a stay at home mom for 9 years between jobs...so am screwed on that), I dont have an income now. (Still have my wonderful man and my super kids...what else could a person want? LOL) I did get a few important things done that I had been putting off. One of our good friends was killed two weeks ago, riding his harley home. A lady did an illegal u-turn in the middle of a curvy road and took him out. He was killed instantly. My sister beat death while in the hospital....yet again...during the last month. I decided it was time to get my paperwork in order! Finally got my heath directive, final arrangements, and trust papers signed and notorized. It feels better to know that stuff is all done and will make life easier for those I leave behind, should anything happen to me. My sister is doing well now, and our friend's family is coping with their loss. I feel blessed to have the people I have in my life. Life is too short to sweat the small stuff!
