Infants and toddlers have a desire to expresstheir needs and wishes, but lack the ability to do so because speech production requirescoordination that lags behind cognitive ability. Sign language gives babies and parents orcaregivers an effective way to communicate at an early age, reducing frustration while fosteringlanguage and intellectual development. Babies begin to use their hands to communicate suchas bye-bye and clapping, so it is an easy and natural process to introduce additional hand signs.Early communication will help your baby be happy and create a bond that is important forhealthy child development. 3. 2008-2009 6TH ANNUAL SEMINAR SERIES CRITICAL ISSUES FACING SPECIAL NEEDS AND AT- RISK CHILDREN The Atlanta Volunteer Lawyers Foundation, The Marcus Autism Center at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, University of Georgia ative Extension, The Barton Child Law and Policy Clinic at Emory University School of Law and the Supreme Court of Georgia’s Committee on Justice for Children Present.
