Guest guest
Hi Sydband friends, I've been lurking because I have been so busy at work, plus getting ready to put my house on the market...but I have been following all your traumas, dramas (Maree, you're a legend! Pyretta, how fantastic! Robyn, happy birthday!) and progress from a distance. But I must jump in to tell you I have followed Gloria Steinem since...well since the 70s I guess it was. She has been a shining light to many American women, and many others. As a fledgling journalist, she did an " undercover " assignment at Hugh Hefner's Playboy Clubs, wearing a bunny suit and all, to expose the way he treated female employees. I think that was the " big bang " start of her career...she went on to found the journal Ms. (I think with Betty Friedan, that other feminist pioneer who died recently). Talk shows loved her because she was so slim, beautiful and witty, besides being so outspoken and radical. She had various high profile relationships but for a long time was against marriage, for ideological reasons. She is famous for saying, " A WOMAN NEEDS A MAN LIKE A FISH NEEDS A BICYCLE. " As time went on, however, she decided a bicycle was a rather attractive option, and in her late 50s (I think) she married a lovely guy. For years, she had been so committed to her career and her crusade, she never actually had a home - just rented rooms and staying with friends. I believe she has now found a rich personal life, well deserved. Best wishes, American Sue
