Guest guest
I am planning on going to the conference but not 100% sure. Have you gone before? My son's therapist said it is very worthwhile. Do you agree? Anne Marie Dybala Who is going to the OC Conference in Boston? Just wondering if anyone on the list is going to the conference. I am hoping to go, just figuring out the logistics. Guest guest
Hi Anne Marie, Yes, I went last year. I did get a lot of information and found it worthwhile in this regard. It was incredible to be in one place with so many experts all with so much to offer, and available to ask questions. Many would freely give you their email and phone numbers, and even offered to communicate with our doctors(too bad our doctors were not interested and were somewhat offended at the suggestion...). It is also great to be in a place where everyone has this in their lives and the weird conversations of OCD are just normal. Our son who was 15 at the time came with us but would not participate in any of the organized groups, so did not benefit, he did meet a couple of kids though. The groups set up for children and teens looked very good, and I know others who liked them and made friends who they stayed in contact with. Like anything it just depends who your child is and their needs. There were a lot of kids there. It was hard to come back home after and deal with professionals who didn't get it in the same way as we did after this experience. Still is actually. Sorry, I'm pretty negative about this, and our situation. I can definitely recommend the conference to you. Barb > > I am planning on going to the conference but not 100% sure. Have you gone before? Guest guest
Barb, The plan right now is for my son and I to go to the conference. Looking forward to meeting some of the other members of the group who are going. Hopefully I'll see you there. Take care Connie > > Just wondering if anyone on the list is going to the conference. Guest guest
That's great Connie, and good that your son will join you. I'm sure you will find it worthwhile. We will definitely have to make a plan for all of us to connect at some point. They have a parent support group session one of the nights. Guest guest
I am hoping to attend the conference with my son who is 16 (17 by then). I am so excited to see so many familiar names from this group who plan on going! I feel like I know so many of you from reading your posts. I have been lurking lately because I am having trouble keeping up with all the emails. Look forward to meeting you all in person. Sinead Re: Who is going to the OC Conference in Boston? Guest guest
I'm definitely going with my son (and hopefully his sisters; there's an interesting panel about sibling relationships), but really it's easy for us because we live down the road. Does anyone want to try to get together perhaps for Saturday lunch and we can all meet (especially the kids!)? Does anyone have an idea of what panels look most promising? Here are a few I thought looked good: What Dr. Spock Didn't Teach You: Parenting a Child with OCD Jacofsky, PsyD Sony Khemiani-Patel, PhD Untangling Behaviors in Kids – Which Are OCD and Which Are Kids Being Kids Kathleen Norris, LPC Parent Support Group Sue Vitek, LCSW No Adults Allowed: Not Just Another Forum for Teens and Young Adults Fred Penzel, PhD Siblings Support Group Constantina Boudouvas, LCSW is Kant Improv Workshop for Kids Mimi Doan Bob Doan OCD: The Game Show for Kids Mansueto, PhD Renae Reinardy, PhD Noah Weintraub, PhD Take It From Me…You Can Beat OCD (ages 6-12) Lori Kasmen, PhD Kathleen Rupertus, PsyD
Guest guest
Hi Dana, That's great that you can go and all your kids too. I would love to meet anyone/everyone who is going. I see they are having support groups both evenings, that might be the opportunity for adults to meet and hang out after the meeting even. The programming for the kids is really good and they are all together based on age, so they will definitely meet each other there. Lunch sounds great too. Last year they provided a box lunch one of the days, if they do that again we could arrange to meet at some spot. My experience with the sessions was that it WAS hard to choose. Looks like you have some good ones picked out. I think the good news is that you can't really go wrong, they are all good, just depends on your particular need. I sometimes split my time between two, and my husband would go to a separate session. It's good to plan ahead, and then when you get there start asking others, certain names (doctors) you will want to hear no matter what the topic, I found. Dr. Jenike comes to mind, he was very funny and entertaining too. Barb
