I just wanted to let you know that this jump in ALT and viral load when treatment is stopped in non-responders or relapsers is NORMAL. It scared me to death when it happened to me! Doctors have said they believe it is a situation similar to going through acute HCV again. Fortunately it does NOT cause any permanent damage, and your viral load will gradually return to about pre-treatment levels. My ALT, which had been normal during treatment, immediately jumped up, and my viral load went from 50,000 to over a million. Before treatment it had been 110,000. A year or so later it was back down to about 190,000. And the best thing was that I no longer had ANY fibrosis left, and it has not come back either. I just wanted to let you know that this is a normal occurance - it can be really scary when it happens to you. The milk thistle is great. I'd also take a vitamin E supplement. I think these have helped keep my fibrosis from returning. Good luck, Claudine __________________________________________________

Guest guest
Hallo Claudine intexas Yes I will add vitamin E to my diet I would like to add that I stopped therapy last year in June. My ALT , AST and viral load have been up since then. I never realy recovered from the therapy. I´v read some things on the net that claim the chance of bilding antibodies to PEG are alot smaller, but after the last therapy I must say that I was not looking forward to trying it. All that makes the MILK THISTLE look like a down right wonder to me. To think that the German doctor that had put me on therapy said not to take the MILK THISTLE. I´m glad the my doctor is on my side and behind me all the way. Bless all of you from Deejaysplace

My > ALT , AST > and viral load have been up since then. I stopped treatment in January 1998. My viral load wasn't back down until July of 1999. Don't worry about your viral load - it's not really very important except as a marker as to whether or not you are responding to treatment. This is one disease where a high viral load does NOT mean a more severe form of the disease or more damage being done. The ALT/AST are not reliable either. Did you have much fibrosis before you went on treatment? If not, then just sticking with a good brand of milk thistle and vitamin E should help keep your liver stable and hopefully reduce inflammation (and NOT needing to spend tons of money!) If you did have significant damage there are other things you might want to add, like colostrum and/or alpha lipoic acid. I think some of that depends on what you can afford too. Good luck - It sounds like you are definitely on the right track! Claudine __________________________________________________

Guest guest
Hi Sharon! I WILL keep those prayers going for your approval and while I am at it, I will pray for an uneventful and successful surgery (or being " skinned " -- whichever you prefer)! LOL Now, your DH has a great idea, since Dr. K enjoys his work -- maybe he should pay us for the pleasure????!!!!! LOL (Okay everybody, put down the weapons -- IT WAS A JOKE -- I love Dr. K, too, and think he is worth every penny he charges!) How many days are they anticipating you being in the hospital? Darn- it I'm going to be out of town....I want to come visit you and view the skinning! Since your self-pay and gambling that the insurance will pitch in I hope you are sprung early...but if you haven't managed to break out by Tues. then I'm going to try to get to Delano and visit you....And if my Cell phone have reception then I will be calling. Praying for an easy recovery Praying insurance sees how hideous your pics are and its not cosmetic! (evil smile...I didn't think you looked hideous...but I don't think its just a matter of cosmetics..truely praying insurance sees the light) Jo

Well, good for you for not letting the insurance delay your plans! I'm praying for you that those idiots get their act together and approve you. In the meantime, you will be on my mind all day on Friday. And hey, there's nothing to be nervous about! You're going to be just fine! You've got the best in the country workin' on you and the prayers and good thoughts of this entire group behind you! All that good karma is gonna take care of you, sweetie! BIG HUG! Under the new federal guidelines, unless the visitor knows your full name, the hospital staff cannot allow them to visit you. It's a bummer and we're not supposed to be emailing full names back and forth on the support list for the same basic reason, viloation of the new prtient privacy guidelines. However, that doesn't preclude someone sending a private email to a friend with that same info. Just a thought, Jerry (who works for the Fed and is always having to find legal ways around stupid regs.) ;-))
