,

We used the vest w/my 10yo son Tyler (AS). He used it alot in 2nd grade

when there was a lot of transistion going on. Now he just uses it on a

stressful day. A friend made the vest out of old jeans and put weights

into the pockets then sewed them shut.

Only wear them for about 20 min at a time or the vestibular system

adjusts itself to the added weight.

Cathie, I've heard weighted blankets work well, also. I'm not sure about

sewing one or how much weights with the vest. I just saw it on another list.

So if anyone else knows, please jump in here. I can try to find out for you.

I know my little boys love it when you wrap them up in a blanket. My 5yr old

loves it when we roll him up in a blanket and swing him back and forth. Talk

to you later, God bless Sharon

Thank you to Jen, , Sharon, and all those who responded to my

question about weighted vests. Sorry I've been so lax in responding,

life gets too hectic. I did see a few vests in the " Abilitations "

catalog -- called Velvasoft Deep Pressure Sensory Vests. Is this the

right thing? If I was to sew one, where would the weights go and how

much weight is necessary?

Would a weighted blanket have the same calming effect? My husband has

noticed that every morning when he wakes (10 yo, AS) up to

give him his meds, he's completely wrapped up in his comforter, head

included.

Thanks a bunch, Cathie

I'm planning on making one but need info on how to use it if anyone has info please let me know. thanksAngie wrote: Does anyone know how long you can leave it on. I know a therapist had told me, but I can't remember. I am thinking she said fifteen minutes at a time. I know you are not suppose to leave it on for long periods of time, so that their bodies don't come dependant on them.

My son's OT recommends 20-30 minutes on, then 20-30 minutes off...I've

been using one for my son for a few months now and it really helps with

the stimming. My mom made one for my son....I got a denim jacket at a

thrift store and cut the sleeves off, then Mom made a piece that she

attached to the shoulders with velcro and used fishing weights in

little baggies that fit in to the pouches in the piece she made. If you

send me your e-mail, I can forward you a link I found on-line about how

to make one...
