Guest guest
I am new to Georgia and in need of family supports. I am confused by what seems to be different programs offered by MHDDAD. Two were served by one agency in TX and same program and the thrid was being evaluated. I have three children with disabilities. Two are high functioning autism spectrum. One is severely developmentally delayed with a diagnosis of microcephaly and Duane's syndrome. I am also an asperger's adult who isn't likely to get diagnosed because of my age even though I definitely need assistance to cope in the typical workplace to re-enter the workplace. Am I right in applying to Developmental Disabilities for my kids? Is there any programs for adults that will help high-functioning people get back on track after major changes and setbacks? Thanks, Donna Joy
Guest guest
More than likely only your child who is more developmentally disabled will qualify for services through MHDDAD. THere are only 2 programs - NOW (under $25,000 per year) and COMP (over $25,000 per year). When you are speaking of TX you are talking about the self-directed model which is not a different waiver but a rather a way of getting the services some families choose. Another way is to choose a provider that will give the services. Some families may even choose to do a combination of self-directed and provider. Some people with HFA or Asperger's can qualify for services as Autism is a developmental disability. However the person's functioning level who have to be similar to someone who is Intellectuallly Disabled. In other words, if a person with Autism has an IQ of 100 but adaptive behavior under 70 then they may qualify. Qualifying and getting the services are 2 different things. Many people qualify and go on the "planning list" (fancy way of sayinig waiting list). You could certainly fill out paperword on all of your children and the Region would decide who qualifies and who doesn't. As far as an agency that helps people with disabilities go to work that would be Vocational Rehabilitation that is through the Department of Labor. Guest guest
Thanks for your reply. Yes, I was very confused by the posts describing waivers and many providers or referral lists also use Beckett and waiver info. I just hadn't taken the time to research the terminology. I finally made time while the kids were playing with new toys from Christmas. Merry Christmas to all, Donna Joy > > More than likely only your child who is more developmentally disabled will qualify for services through MHDDAD.
