Guest guest
I started low and kept it low ( around 150 or 160 mg) 3x/day for 2 months. My child still had a viral rash at 2 months so I upped it to 250 3x/day and that was a week ago and the rash is gone. From what I have read, at that weight, the most effective does is the 250 3x/day. That seems to be true for us.

Guest guest
I'd say that if it's not effective for you at that dose then you might want to consider switching antivirals. How long have you been on it? Have you seen gains? What is your nizoral dose? Guest guest
He has been on it since May 07, so over a year now. We recently switched to Nizoral, once per day 300 mg at nite. We tried higher doses of Valtrex but yeast got bad, but he wasn't on a new antifungal until recently. should we try a higher dose or switch? He has high herpes 6. We did see major gains initially, but that have leveled off now. > > > what do u suggest for my son 44 lbs. Guest guest
You can't stay on the same antifungal for too long. If he was on the same antifungal since May of last year, he needed to switch to a new antifungal by Nov. 07. You really need to rotate. I would personally try upping the dose and if yeast is still an issue add Nystatin. If that doesn't work, then try switching antivirals.Actually, now that I think about it, you should just go ahead and switch antivirals. You've been on it too long at too low a dose. Just my opinion. I'm not a doctor. Guest guest
No, the Nizoral is new, he was on Amphotericin for a long time. He is 44 lbs. almost six years old. He did well when we switched to Nizoral, yeast symptoms went away. > >> > >>> what do u suggest for my son 44 lbs. Guest guest
I have to apologize for my previous post. For whatever reason, I seemed to have gotten myself confused and thought you were on too low a dose when in fact, you were on a pretty high dose. Just so we're clear, you're on 750 mg 3x a day, right? So the total is 2250 mgs?If that's the case, yes, I suggest possibly switching to another antiviral. I also suggest pulling titers to see if maybe the titers have normalized. If they have, you can consider taking him off and then retesting for titers every few months to make sure they stay down.I'm on too many lists! For some reason I thought you were the one that said you were taking something like 250 mg. total per day. I only realized it when I was reading the previous posts so I could remember what we were talking about... Sorry! This is one time I'm glad someone didn't trim the posts! Guest guest
Okay, so just so I'm up to speed since I don't know what message you are responding too (and I've apparently gotten myself confused and befuddled ... Are you the one that is doing 250 mg/day? If that's the case, you may have misunderstood what someone said on dosage. It probably should have read 250 mg 3x a day, not once a day. But that's neither here nor there, the dosage you are using is too low. How long have you been on that dose? Guest guest
he is on 750 mg per day total for over a year. He is almost six, 44 lbs. Is that too low? I agree we are due to retest titers soon. > > > No, the Nizoral is new, he was on Amphotericin for a long time. He > > is 44 lbs. almost six years old. Guest guest
For being 6, 44#, and on 750 mg I would say you are definitely on the low end of an okay dose. I would definitely say you can go up to 1500 mg, though, if you wanted. It should work out better fro you since you've changed antifungals. And again, if you need to you can add Nystatin. Guest guest
Thanks Cheryl, you mean we can do Nizoral and Nystatin, what would be the purpose, I thought the Nizoral was systemic? > >> > >>> No, the Nizoral is new, he was on Amphotericin for a long time. > > He > >>> is 44 lbs. almost six years old. Guest guest
The nizoral is systemic but you had mentioned that you were having yeast issues before, even with an antifungal when you were on diflucan. I only mention it so that you can add nystatin if you find that nizoral alone isn't tackling the yeast. Guest guest
I didn't realize you can do both. thanks, we'll try what you suggest before we switch antivirals and run titers. thanks again. > >>>> > >>>>> No, the Nizoral is new, he was on Amphotericin for a long time. > >>> He > >>>>> is 44 lbs. almost six years old. Guest guest
I would go ahead and pull titers anyway. If you find that your titers haven't dropped any, then you know it's a good time to switch antivirals anyway. Good luck!
