For clarification:

Barbara has left this list following a reminder I sent her about editing

quoted text. This reminder was sent after my having sent three public posts

on this topic in the past two months. Barbara believes that every member

should be allowed to make several mistakes before being sent a reminder.

Clearly, with 800 list members it would be impossible to keep such a tally.

Barbara blames the moderators for a lowered quality of posting on this list.

I find that characterization of the list posting offensive.. I believe the

quality of this list is high. But in any case, I invite anybody who's

interested to go to the archives to compare the quality of the list now with

July and early August, during the endless flame war which ended in the

implementation of active moderation.

There is certainly no need to walk off in a huff, like Barbara did, over

questions of moderation. If anyone has a problem with a moderator, you can

write to her privately or write to bowel cleanse-owner@..., where your

e-mail will be received privately by all the moderators. If you don't

receive satisfaction, you can then post to the list. But such posts under no

circumstances can involve flaming of any kind.

My thanks to most of you for keeping a great list.

Dear Robin,

First I shall say that I don't read this list that often anymore.

And don't post as much either. So my opinion may not be the

most relevant as compared with those who are regulars here.

I personally have an issue with this, Robin.

Barbara clearly has the right to an opinion on the matter.

What do you find " offensive " about Barbara's opinion

that the posts on the list are lower quality? Is Barbara

not as good or valid a judge as you or I or anyone else?

But, more importantly, you are a moderator on this

list, and hold a position with power and implied authority.

Your comment leaves the impression that you MAY be trying

to dictate that people agree that " posts here are high

quality " . It is not CLEAR that you are trying to dictate

this, but it seems a possibility. Even though I think

the idea of dictating such things is both silly AND

offensive. Please note, I did NOT say that you ARE

trying to dictate, I said that it is unclear, and

has been raised as an issue.

I thought she walked off pretty nicely. She said goodbye, and

explained her thinking. I'll admit that if I were you I

might feel a bit put out. From over here, I thought

it was not exactly slamming the door.

Further, based on your own comments, my own personal guess is

that if Barbara had written to you or to the moderators as

a group (as you suggest), that your commentary would have

been much as it has been on the list, which would not have

been satisfactory to Barbara. This is conjecture on my

part. But, my point is that not everyone will be satisfied

by any given set of policies or non-policies and some will

leave. Taking a different action (as you suggest) won't

necessarily " solve " the issue.

And, for what it is worth, I do not believe I am flaming anyone

here.

For clarification, my remark about flaming was not in reference to Barbara.

It was in reference to the member who threw in her two cents by saying that

she simply deletes the moderators' e-mails on posting without reading them

because they are silly, ending on a triumphant " Ha! " . I would characterize

such a comment as inflammatory no matter who it was directed to, regular

member or moderator. I did not single the writer out for obvious reasons--to

avoid being inflammatory myself. But with the high signal to noise ratio on

these lists, you can't win.

I think you do a really good job. the only thing i dont like about the list is

all the cut and paste stuff when links would be better. the only way to stop

people from doing it i think is to delete their huge posts with a message as to

why, and they would really yipe about that, so it probably isnt a good idea.

i have a list, and i find that it is really hard to be fair sometimes and really

difficult when some people think that the list should be run to met their

personal needs. anyhow you are very fair.

I was trying to think of exceptions to the moderation rule I cited below, and

I thought of " happiness " . Can't be too much happiness, right? Then, I thought

maybe not so true. In spite of my wish to look jaded and world-weary, sort of

like Greta Garbo, I go around grinning like a fool. Strangers probabluy

assume I'm either demented or a tourist.

Of course, I'd look more like Greta Garbo if I hadn't lost my high cheekbones

to Prednisone fat. That makes me a little less happy.

> Golden Rule, He who has the gold, makes the rules...I understand the rule, as evidenced by my last paragraph in that post...> Whether "flaming" is defined by you, wiki, or the moderator in charge,> guess who trumps on the list.It is verbicide - and more importantly the lack of people willing tochallenge those committing it - that has destroyed our ConstitutionalRepublic, by twisting the meanings of the words in it (theConstitution). Sorry, I don't stand for it.
