The medication gives my child a chance to live without constant negative feedback from the world around him tearing him up on a daily basis. Yes, it gives us a new challenge, keeping weight in check, but it gives him a chance at a future that he would not have had if he had been allowed to continue down the self-destructive path his negativity and anger set him on. There are no easy answers. Absolutely, in a perfect situation my child wouldn't need any medication, but that's not where we are at. So we choose as best we can and accept the consequences as they come. I have to let my child pursue some happiness even if I am worried about side effects.
