MSM is structurally related to dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), but the behavior of

these two is different. DMSO is a highly polar solvent and an excellent ligand,

with water-like dissolving properties whereas MSM is less polar and less

reactive. MSM is also a metabolite of DMSO.
