Guest guest
Allie, I know what you mean. When the weather is bad and Karac can't get out, it is rough. I just thought of it as cabin fever, but it could be S.A.D. Pat K**************Start the year off right. Guest guest
Hi I have been wracking my brain trying to figure out why my son has been soo cranky and " difficult " ever since the end of Oct. We have tried so many things I cant even count them. Last nigth though I had an idea. I wonder if he is not getting enough sunlight? Because that is the weekend of the time change so its dark at like 4:30 here. He is also a night person and stays up late and sleeps in the morning. He does go outside, but he was sick for like 2 weeks so didnt go out much. We also dont go as many places in the winter because of my health issues (ice, snow) makes it dangerous at times to be out... So??? do you think I may have hit on something? I can make him go outside more often but are there certain lights? light bulbs etc that could put that kind of lighting in the house? If anyone has any info about that please let me know. Thanks Allie (wi)

Guest guest
Hi Allie and all: I sufferd from S.A.D. well before I had children. My 8 year old son, Nicolas is CLEARLY affected by it as well as being autistic. Before he was born and when I first realized he was also affected, I did/do the following: Using a self-timing device, have a bedside lamp go on two hours before the time he normally would need to get up. You don't have to use a special light bulb for this, but the full spectrum lights do make a difference. About the full spectrum bulbs, they really DO make a difference. You can find them in many different wattages (sp?) and even the flourescents (that many of us have in our kitchen). Also, changing bedspreads, pillows, curtains, from dark and/or neutral shades to bright colors can be a " pick me up " . Of course these are just suggestions and what works for your child will be unique, AND there's the overstimulation that could occur so " tweaking " these ideas (such as using a lower watt bulb in the bedside lamp with the timer, or having it timed to go on less than 2 hours before). With Nicolas I found using his favorite colors on his bedspread and sheets also helped (happens to be royal blue). I also have hung more brightly colored pictures here and there, mostly his and his brother's which they have made at school.
