Guest guest
My 21 year old son had a case of MRSA early this summer which he told me about after being treated with antibiotics. He has just come to visit me after Burningman and a week in SF living in a van before returning to school and told me the MRSA has come back. I told him it was never fully eradicated the first time. He is talking about going to a clinic and getting more antibiotics. My question is this: Does Anyone had a proved treatment for MRSA that actually works he can use? I do not want to see him on endless rounds of antibiotics which will become more ineffective each round. The MRSA is located on one of his knees. He is a dancer. What do I have to do to disinfect the sheets, towels and his clothing so it will not spread to other places on his body or to me? I appreciate any help anyone can give me. He is my only child and I do not want this to keep returning and get out of hand. Thank you very much. Elsbeth
Guest guest
Hello Elsbeth, A very effective disinfecting spray can be made by putting 10 ml of 5% sodium chlorite into a glass, adding 10 ml of 10% citric acid, mix and let the solution activate for 10 minutes. Then put this into a spray bottle and add enough water to make a total of 500 ml. You can use this solution to spray and wipe down hard surfaces. You can also fold a paper towel to fit the size of the MRSA infection on the knee, saturate the paper towel with the solution, and hold it in contact with the infected area for 5 - 10 minutes. The goal is to do an application 4 - 6 times the first day, then twice a day after that. The MRSA should be killed off after the first day, but you want to prevent infection and re-infection. We have seen significant results in as little as a few hours and as long as a couple of weeks. You can also use this solution to disinfect the van interior. To disinfect your laundry you will need to measure the amount of water your washer uses. Once you have that you put 1 ml of 5% sodium chlorite per liter of water used. You put the sodium chlorite in the bleach dispenser and wash the laundry as you normally would. Take care when doing this because this concentration can bleach if applied directly to fabric. This should cover most things, but carpet and curtains and furniture may also be a source of re-infection. I usually put a cool mist humidifier in an " average sized " room and run a liter of solution through it. This allows the solution to coat and penetrate rugs, curtains, furniture, walls and so on. This solution is made by adding 16 ml of 5% sodium chlorite to the bottle and then adding enough water to make a total of 1 liter. Another option is to mix up a separate spray bottle and spray the solution on the areas. There are products available that are much stronger, but I am concerned with bleaching. Nok Out and Vital Oxide are such products, but I have run into bleaching of cotton shirts while using them. If bleaching is not a concern, you can mix up a similar product by adding 40 ml of 5% sodium chlorite to the bottle and then adding enough water to make a total of 1 liter. This will take care of the house, van, and the infection on the knee. Next you need to educate your son about a healthy diet in order to build his immune system back after it has been assaulted by the antibiotics.
