If you are getting leaner, fat inches going down (like your waist), muscle

inches going up or

" appearing " , getting stronger and scale weight not changing much, then you are

losing fat and

gaining muscle. The tape measure doesn't lie.

Hi Betsy, and welcome to the group! You can figure out how much

bodyfat/muscle you lose/gain as long as you have your bodyfat

measurement numbers and you get progress checks done. Here's an

example:

Female

Starting weight: 150 lbs

Starting BF: 25%

Fat mass: 37.5 lbs. (25% of 150 lbs)

Fat-free mass: 112.5 lbs

*Calculate your lean mass by taking 150 total lbs - 37.5 fat lbs =

112.5 fat-free mass (which includes water, lean muscle, skin, organs,

bones, etc.)

Female

4-week weight: 146 lbs

4-week BF: 22%

Fat mass: 32.0 lbs.

Fat-free mass: 114.0 lbs

If you compare your starting numbers with your 4-week progress

numbers, then you will see that your fat mass went from 37.5 lbs to

32.0 lbs for a net loss of 5.5 lbs of BF. Your fat-free mass went

from 112.5 lbs to 114.0 lbs for a net gain of 1.5 lbs of lean mass.

Hope that makes sense! :)

If you're new to the BFL program, don't.

And

> also, on our free days, can we drink alcohol??

Yep. I believe once or twice a week on your approved food days you

can have a glass of wine with dinner as well.

That is something the

On the site www.bodyforlife.com , they say use your discretion.

Thnks a bunch,

Welcome aboard, !

I emailed one of the Grand Champions.. i forget which.. i did a search on

Google for his name, and some corporate website came up. Had an email

listed. It was in the same city as the Bio on the EAS profile for him, so I

gave it a shot.

Well, it was him. (michael something.. i think.. dont remember).

So, I asked him some questions. On of which was.. how much cardio did you

actually do?

He said that for the actual 12 week CONTEST, he did cardio MUCH more than

the book said. He said he was in the gym 2x a day doing cardio at least 5

days a week. For aerobic classes, running, whatever he could get his hands

on, so to speak. PLUS the weight training. (we didnt talk much about that)

He was a MAJOR fat loss specimen.. He also told me, that if I planned to do

the 12 week challenge, get started before the actual 12 weeks, give yourself

maybe a good month of warmup/trial error/getting used to lifestyle change,

before taking the before pics.

This is my recommendation if you are planning to do the contest.

Many people here aren't doing the contest... and if you are NOT, I would

suggest sticking to the book verbatim. Unless your in a rush for fast fat

loss or something.. But the book gives you much more substance to build a

new lifestyle, so you dont fall off, or get bored to easily.

Hope that helps a bit.

I use diet drinks occasionally, but I have heard that aspartame makes

you crave carbohydrates. I don't know if it is true and I haven't

experienced it personally.

I don't do more cardio or weights than the book recommends. It is

the quality of the training that counts. More is not necessarily

better.

I read this is true as well. Also, aspartame can convert to

neurotoxins. Do a search for " sweetener " in the archives and you

will find the post I did with a Web site that tells about various

sweeteners.

I am new to this too and am in the process of figuring out how to

handle the different aspects of BPD. The one thing my therapist

told me to do when my Mom (still can't bring myself to call her

NADA) sends me emails, calls me, etc. is to stick with " light "

conversation and " kill her with kindness " . My Mom just emailed me a

nasty email and I simply replied that I loved her and that when

things calm down everything would be fine. My therapist said to

tell her that things will be fine even though I know until she gets

help they won't. When she " corners " me on the phone I just

say, " Mom I love you and I need to go make dinner right now " and

hang up.

Thank you for the reply. I manage to be light for a while and then my anger

takes over, or I get PMT and am less able to be light, or even see the funny

side of things. My area of responsibility not my mother's! I guess I do a lot of

what is called in the book SWOE 'intermittent reinforcement' and that I have to

work on being much more consistent. Hard in the face of such inconsistency

from my mother. I do have support from my sister but sometimes we end up

bouncing the latest 'problems' back and forth, until one of us 'does something'

either visits, calls her doctors, whatever. So we end up putting pressure on

each other and so on. The value of being able to reality check with her though

is enormous. The trouble is we do it too much sometimes. At periods of high

activity, there can be so many calls that the rest of life disappears. We both

have caller display so we can see when she calls us and ansaphones but I

find it very hard when I get six messages saying call me to just ignore them

until I feel ready to ring. So between us we sort of manage and have done for

a long time now, but we both need to find new ways of thinking and behaving,

we can't change her behaviour no matter what we do can we? But I will try the

short replies, affirming that I love her more frequently. Thanks again.

M-

I have recently stumbled on the " diagnosis " of my mother as BPD

with the recommendation of the book SWOE. It has been an eyeopener-

a great relief to have a label, to put the awful behavior in

perspective and give me tools to change my relationship.

You asked about forgiveness. This is what the forgiver does not

the what the forgiven does. The forgiven may or may not repent.

The forgiver can live a much freer life if she forgives. This is

far different than boundary setting. It simply means that we do not

carry the burden of the wrongs done to us. We do not let them weigh

us down anymore. This is biblical. We can only change ourselves

not others. In my experience forgiving can be short but at times it

is an ongoing process due to the size of the hurt and how long it

has been part of us. Prayer for healing can change things faster.

I hope this helps. BPD can overwhelm you even from far away. I

happen to live close by but keenly remember how controlling she was

when I was on the other side of the world during 9th grade.

So two keys: Forgive her every time she messes up. Remember and

become more and more separate from her. Hear her wishes and desires

but respond as an observer and not as a child tangled in her web.

All the best and prayer changes things in mighty ways.

I'd just like to briefly introduce myself to the group. I manage my sister's practice and one day stumbled onto something called IMP. It turned out that the things that I was telling my sister to do were mostly the same things advocated by IMP. I am hoping to be able to share ideas with the group.

We use Amazing Charts EMR, we tried out Instant Medical History (she didn't like it), and I am currently starting to plan for an attempt to use AppointmentQuest Online Scheduling.

I'd like to give a special thanks to hockeyref () and Dr. Lynn Ho for directing me to this group.

I grew up outside NYC I have been in penn station a million times Went to madison sq garden for t he cirus as a kid I did not know they were in t he same place!! How embarassing. It was all a mystery to me

I only saw Radio city music hall also from the inside come up thorugh the train station who knows what these places look like outside! Same thing for the planetarium and museum of natural hisotry You get on the LiRR and you never goo utsdie!

Good point! Go Rangers! ... and, of course, Go Knicks! For those not acquainted with NYC, Madison Square Garden, where both Rangers and

Knicks play, is above Penn Station. So that's how this (hopefully) short tangent

relates.Welcome Wayne. By the way, what's your sister's name?TimOn Fri, August 8, 2008

Ah, yes, another advantage of growing up outside of NYC in the northern suburbs.

From Westchester, the Metro North goes to Grand Central. And from there I always

wanted to walk outside so I could pass the lions at the library a couple blocks away

(now I like to stop at Park but in my youth it was better to avoid it... much

nicer now). Otherwise, south to MSG but with a quick glimpse of Empire State

Bdlg, or north up 5th ave to Central Park/St Pat's ... now I know why I liked Grand

Central more than Penn Station, more central location. But, Radio

City without going outside?? No Christmas memories of Rockefeller Center ice

rink, St Pat's, 5th Ave with the smell of roasting chestnuts and the store window

designs? No walking up to FAOSchwartz? Etc?Wow, you have a vacation to

plan!Wayne, nice website. It's always great to know about more

IMPs in NYC where it just seams the specialists run the whole show.TimOn Fri, August 8, 2008 10:59

Thanks for the complement. I wouldn't call us an IMP. I believe a doctor has to have specific non-medical skills to make that work. My sister doesn't have those specific skills. But with some proper business planning and by using some techniques that IMPs use and playing to her strengths.I can turn her practice into being quite profitable, or so I belieive. The "standard insurance" model usually used for practices today play specifically to her weakness and can result in her skill as a doctor being overshadowed or nullified by me trying to get her to see 25-30 patients/day. It has been a disaster. We did get up to 17, but if sustained for any length of time, she can't keep up w/ the charting AND we are stressed and irritalbe and still need to hire a 2nd MA.

Once I got her using the EMR things started really changing. Then we got the lab interfaces---another big improvement. I think I can reduce the MAs workload (and mine for when I have to cover phones or correct her mistakes) by using a little more automation. Like letting patients book their own appts online (AppointmentQuest), and maybe signing up for one of those virtual PBXs like OneBox. Thjis means the MA can work more on things we need her to, and we won't have to hire a second one.

Then I need to shift her to patients with a higher fee/visit so that she can REALLY be profitable on just 10-12 patients per day. I have alot of the ideas set up. Just need to fine tune them and implement them. I think. But 10 patient /day with conventional overhead just wont pay the salary or the bills.
