Guest guest
Not taking MSM myself, Carol, but wanted to tell you that on a newsgroup I read, a couple of people have reported this and one said their mother had severe stomach lining damage which it was suspected may have been caused by MSM. I can look up the posts about this if you or anyone else wants it. Liz G

Guest guest
Just wanted to add my two cents about MSM. I've been reading about several people's dramatic reactions to it--both good and bad. What's really frustrating to me is I've been taking 5,000 mg of it per day for 6 weeks with NO reaction whatsoever. I'm beginning to think I'm just a tough egg to crack. Guest guest
: I had/have the same problem as you that my symptoms are worse in the spring and subside in the fall. My guess is that you have allergies that aggravate your symptoms. I do and while I love this time of the year, I also battle with it as well. Guest guest
Thank you for the explanation of MSM. However, I am totally confused. I am allegic to Sulphur. This was discovered when I was presbribed a Suplphur based anti-biotic and I had rashes and high temperuture. What should I do ? My hyper has actually subsided now. It flares up badly around Spring time and then goes low when Autumn comes. Do you know anything about the seasons in relation to Hyper Thyroid? thanks MSM In a message dated 5/5/99 8:22:25 PM Pacific Daylight Time, teresa@... writes: << What is MSM? Thanks >> MSM is methylsulfanylmethane, which is the most commonly used sulfur supplement. Despite its very chemically sounding name, it is supposedly a naturally occuring sulfur compound and the supplement is usually made from wood pulp. Sulfur is a very important mineral which many people may be deficient in. It appears to work with copper and this has implications for anyone who is supplementing with copper in order to correct a deficiency. If there is a limited amount of free sulfur in the body then taking copper may use up that free sulfur quite rapidly. It's possible that sulfur could then get deficient, so I think it's wise to supplement with sulfur to prevent this. During my recovery from hyperT I ate about three eggs a day (egg yolk is an excellent sulfur source) and took 500-1000 mgs of MSM. There are some interesting connections between sulfur and selenium and also the antithyroid drugs are sulfur-based, so there is plenty of possible reasons why a sulfur deficiency might also be involved in thyroid disease. What the exact mechanisms of action are remain to be discovered, but it seems that MSM helps many people with thyroid problems, especially hypers. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ @Backup - The #1 Online Backup Service Automatic, Safe, Reliable Backup and Restores. Guest guest
--- i understand your concern about MSM if you're allergic to sulphur-based drugs. I myself have a poor tolerance for these sorts of medications, as well as foods (i.e., dried fruits, wine) that are treated with sulfites. However, MSM is different, as it is natural and not chemical. I did start with an incredibly small amount of MSM (I opened up the capsule and only took a fraction of the contents therein), and have slowly increased it. No ill effects (like wheeziness, wooziness, dizziness) like what I've experienced with the drugs and foods. >Thank you for the explanation of MSM. > >However, I am totally confused. Guest guest
I started adding msm to my diet about two months ago. Since I've been doing everything " right, " more or less, I didn't see any real differences except for one. I like to do a seasonal detox/cleanse (juices, water, anti-parasite herbs & tinctures, etc.) and I *always* get a humongo (my own word :-)) cold sore that usually runs inside and outside of my mouth and looks fairly gross. With this last cleanse, I got one small cold sore that went away in about four days. With no scar. That's the only difference in what I've been doing in the past year on a regular basis. I was expecting a really horrible Herxheimer because I hadn't exactly been behaving myself diet-wise because of a variety of reasons. When I realized how terrible I was feeling, I went back on my program and began the cleanse. I get my MSM from www.oralchelation.com who sells it in bulk. It is the best price anywhere, period. They also have a lot of information about MSM. I might add that when I started this detox, I added a quarter of a teaspoon of MSM to my morning and evening green drinks. Maybe that's why I detoxed so easily with a minimum of problems. === Irene K. Guest guest
Hi Sandy! That's right! When you start MSM it " cleans " out toxins and you do feel badly for a short while. I don't think it should last for two months!!! 3,000 daily is what I take - sometimes I take as much as 6,000 in a day. (it is safe to take that much). I feel much better and have more energy when I'm taking MSM. If you do decide to take it again, don't start with 3,000 daily.....start at a lower dose and work up gradually just like we do on AP. Hope this helps a little. Guest guest
Sandy and group, MSM is made of naturally based SULFA foods. I can not take meds with Sulfa. I tried the MSM because it was a natural Sulfa thinking it would be o.k.. But I had a bad reaction to it also. I got a headache, gas and nausea. So be careful if you are allergic to Sulfa. Guest guest
Sandy, I don't know for sure but there should be. I found out I when I had a Bladder infection and was given Bactrin (sp) it is the number one drug for that. Well I felt like my head was going to burst open, the head pain was so bad. I was vomiting and felt like I was going to pass out. I was home alone when this happened and called the emergency room. The nurse there told me I was having a allergic reaction to the Sulfa in the drug. She says that this happens all the time. That many people are allergic to Sulfa and don't know it until they take it in some form. She told me to stop taking it vomit it all out, your body will want it out if you are allergic to it. Also to put cold towels on my head and body. After 4 or 5 hours it started to go away. Now I have it listed on my Medic alter bracelet I wear all the time. Never want that to happen again. Guest guest
After I'd taken MSM for about a month, I began having terrible stomach aches; discontinuing the MSM ended the stomach trouble. I realize this may be a coincidence and not the MSM at all, but I am hesitant to take MSM again. I was taking 2,500 mg per day. I, like Sandy, am interested in thoughts from the group regarding MSM. Guest guest
Pete, I took MSM for over a year. I can't say that it did anything for my RA. It did make my skin nice and soft and may have provided other health benefits, but I've noticed no difference being off of it now for two months than when I was on it for a year. As always, your mileage may vary. ;-) Criss

Guest guest
Hello Babs, I had the following web address in my collection. I didn't peruse the site again, but it appears to have information regarding MSM research, etc. (I believe they sell the stuff, so maybe it's not the best source of information.) http://intohealth.com/research.html I did try MSM last winter, but I believe I am allergic to it. Due to stomach upset and severe itching, I had to give it up before I'd given it long enough to see how it might work for me. Guest guest
Hi Ana: It sounds like you are taking a lot of MSM per dr. Very interesting! My AP dr. is Dr. Trentham who participated in the MIRA trials with Dr. Brown, he's an Associate Professor at Harvard School of Medicine and still heavily into the research. He's the one who said don't bother taking it since word is not in yet on its effectiveness. I really don't know if it helped me or not. I just stopped taking it. Then again, he also said not to bother with the milk thistle I was taking to protect my liver from methotrexate - I still do take that once in awhile since I just can't see any harm in it based on my research. His primary focus right now is to get me off the methotrexate and increase the minocycline from 50mg 2X day to 100mg 2X day, so he does not want any other supplements - also probably 'cause I'm on synthroid, lipitor, hytrin, folic acid and sometimes mestinon for Myasthenia Gravis. It is a lot of stuff to deal with so I can understand his current opinon on the MSM. It's interesting that your dr. recommends it. Is dr. basing this on a certain study and/or on results seen in pts.? Babs
Guest guest
I have to disagree with Dr. Trentham. Silymarin is good for protecting the liver when you are on toxic medications. Dr. Franco prescribes this supplement when needed. I hope you are taking acidophilus. Ethel Babs56p@... wrote: > > From: Babs56p@... > > Hi Ana: > > It sounds like you are taking a lot of MSM per dr.
