Guest guest
Long ago, the prettiest bird in the sky was Crow. Crow was beautiful like no other bird and like no other animal, like no other fish in the ocean and like no other two legged. And Crow had a beautiful voice, singing songs for all the animals and for Great Spirit. Everyone was proud of Crow and looked up to Crow. One day, Crow met Eagle sitting in the nest and got jealous of Eagle. Crow worried that Eagle was more beautiful than Crow and that the birds and animals and fish and two-leggeds would soon discover this to be true as well. And so Crow began to make fun of Eagle and would tell Eagle how bad Eagle looked. Many years passed and still Crow continued teasing Eagle. Soon, however, Crow grew dissatisfied with life and began to tease the other animals and birds of the world. Not happy with this, in time Crow began to steal from other birds and animals and two-leggeds and Crow began to tease them as well. One day Crow was very hungry for eggs. Crow flew for many miles until Crow reached Eagle's nest. In the nest were great big Eagle eggs and Eagle was nowhere to be found. Crow ate the eggs quickly and began to choke on one of the eggs, Eagle came back and saw Crow choking. Eagle wanted to help and flew to Crow as fast as Eagle could fly. Eagle knew that Eagle's eggs were gone but this did not mean that Crow should die for having done this terrible thing to Eagle. It was too late. Before Eagle could help, Crow feil to the ground. The ground was covered in thick, black mud, and so when Crow landed, still choking, Crow rolled around in the thick, black mud getting dirtier and dirtier. Soon Crow had black mud all over his feathers and he was making an awful noise. Crow did not die but Crow wore his shame from that day onward ... covered in thick, black mud and making choking noises so that Crow's voice was no longer beautiful. This why Crow is the way Crow is today. If one does bad things in life, he or she will suffer a negative outcome in time. And if you do good deeds in life, Great Spirit will reward when your time comes. The trick is to ask yourself if you want to be like Crow ... or if you want to be like Eagle. A person may be proud without being vain. Pride relates more to our opinion of ourselves, vanity to what we would have others think of us. ATTRIBUTION: Jane Austen (1775–1817), British novelist. Bennet in Pride and Prejudice, ch. 5 (1813).
