Guest guest
Hmm.. sounds like my son. He's been labelled PDD nos by our pediatrician but I've avoided an official diagnosis so far. He's four, reads, navigates the internet, can count to 100. He can't sit still with his peers in nursery school or socialize properly. I guess it all depends on what you believe about the spectrum right? I believe that Dr Bock is onto something. I think they are all different versions of the same problem, toxins. My suggestion would be to point her to yahoo groups, books and websites that you have found informative and then let her form her own conclusions. I would totally recommend Dr Bock's book though. Guest guest
http://www.linguisystems.com/itemdetail.php?id=702 Try Linguisystems, they have GREAT products….Our grandson also has Hyperlexia….highly intelligent and understands “some” of what he reads but he can’t “spit it out verbally” as far as explaining the comprehension of the story. BUT he can do the story comprehension if he sees the questions in writing.. He is now 8. He taught himself to read at TWO and now reads at a 6th grade level. He was spelling words like “Universal” with his baby blocks” and looking at my King books….”I didn’t realize he was READING them! He also loves NUMBERS and has since the age of 2 as well and can sequence till the cows come home. For reinforcers we used to have to spell and count with him.. He too still has trouble with the “WH” questions but the fact that they can read really helps them in the long run. If I want him to do something I just type it and hand it to him when he is looking at me like ‘what did you say?” He is verbal but it has been slooooo getting to real language. Basically he is also ODD (Oppositional defiant disorder and he has all but refused to speak until this year. He is FINALLY starting to cooperate. He is also extremely hyper but we do the natural remedies rather than the scripts for that. We also home school so we can focus all of our energy right now on language. If you get the cards from Lingui systems we just spend most of the time using those and trying to get him to tell us about them. We also get a lot of our Material from www.superduperinc.com (not 100% sure that is the correct link) but it is Super Duper. He loves the solar system and to show you how smart he really is he googles weird stuff like “Early Sumatrin Astronomy” and some kind of Asian elephant….he spends hours on the internet….He also taught himself how to type….not like we would do but let me tell you he is pretty darn fast and uses two hands as opposed to the hunt and peck. Guest guest
When I put my son in developmental preschool, at age 4, he had already been reading for a year. He was self-taught. According to what his teacher told me at the time, hyperlexia meant the ability to read at an early age, especially when the ability to read exceeded the comprehension of what was read. This fit my son, so I accepted it. Later, I suspected he had aspergers, which eventually became his diagnosis, along with GAD-NOS (generalized anxiety disorder-not otherwise specified). Many years later, when my youngest son was diagnosed as autistic, I started researching online. I found out that hyperlexia has a social deficit component, which sounded like autism or aspergers to me. Also, I found that anxiety was actually part of being autistic, due to a problem in the amygdala. I had always thought it was seperate. In my opinion, hyperlexic children may actually receive fewer services and go under the radar, as far as a spectrum diagnosis is concerned, because they are so smart. Their kind of smart, book smart, is the kind most prized in traditional school settings. While I think it's great that book-learning is often easy for these children, I feel that they still require social remediation if they're going to be in a position to put their book-learning to productive use in adult life.
