Guest guest
Vancomycin or flagyl are the rx's I've heard of most often for treating bacteria. For naturals, Berberine Complex or straight goldenseal has worked well for us. Any antibacterial can cause a nasty die-off and/or negative reaction so be on the look out for anything unusual and be prepared w/activated charcoal. Loads of carbs are not good if he has yeast and/or bad bacteria. Try harder to get in more protein and hide veggies in things like burgers, chicken salad, liquefy in juice, wherever. Try to cut back on the starchy carbs as they are only going to exacerbate the situation. -----Original Message-----From: mb12 valtrex [mailto:mb12 valtrex ]On Behalf Of vellamarySent: Sunday, June 15, 2008 7:38 PMTo: mb12 valtrex Subject: treating bacterial overgrowth Hello allJust want to thank all of you for your help and support. I am new to this and am kind of fumbling my way through with a "DAN/naturopath"? who gives some guidance but not enough! It is all of you who are really getting me through. Question...Urine test revealed my son is riddled with bacteria. No yeast issues, is it ok to treat with antibiotics and probiotics as my DAN is suggesting? Any antibiotics which would be most effective? I asked for Vancocymin and my GP looked at me like I was crazy. Is this treatment sufficient for keeping bacteria at bay? What would stop it from returning and what caused it in the first place? His diet consists of lots of carbs (wholegrain bread, crackers, gluten free pasta, heaps!!!!! of all kinds of fruit, no vegies, minimal fish and meat and rice milk. Thanks in advance for your guidance and support. Guest guest
It really depends on the type of bacteria. Clostridia is caused by antibiotics and only a few will kill it. Vancomycin is of the antibiotics that will kill clostridia, it is often referred to as the drug of last resort because it is often given when all other antibiotics fail. For clostridia, my DAN first gave my daughter flagyl, but she is unable to swallow pills and she could not handle the horrible taste so she prescribed vancomycin. If you have a copy of her labs, start googling the types of bacteria you see and you will find answers to what will kill it. Guest guest
Our DAN doctor run a comperhensive stool analysis for my son. The test showed two specific types of Bacteria, in the same test, they run a special sensetivity test to determine what kind of medication can be used to get rid of the existing Bacteria. Guest guest
We did vancomycin and flagyl. the general practitioners don't like to use it because it's one of the only remaining antibiotics that they can turn to when bacteria is resistant to other abx. they don't want to overuse it, so they refrain from using it until they absolutely need it. From what i understand, when there are systemic infections, vanco is delivered via IV. with the gut bacteria, it is delivered orally. and is not supposed to be able to cross the intestines. (however, with a leaky gut, I have no idea if this holds true). we had the specific carbohydrate diet (www.pecanbread.com) in place before we started. this diet eliminates the type of carbohydrate that can feed the bacteria in the intestines. a lot of times, people report that the bacterial problems clear up when on the abx, only to have them return shortly after they stop giving them. by not having their food source available to them during this time, my hope was that we wouldn't encounter this problem. I think we have defeated the bacteria, based on an immediate increase in aggression(die off reaction) followed by a huge mellowing out. but we haven't had labs done to confirm that. we have fungal issues as well, so we're working on that before we retest. based on ryan's stool and behavioral changes, I " m guessing that what we're doing is working. good luck!
