Guest guest
FYI -- This is the link to the section of the NDRN web-page related to the “ Treatment” http://www.ndrn.org/ashley/default.htm The introductory section is an excerpt from the Washington Protection and Advocacy System (WPAS) Investigative Report regarding the “ Treatment” . It has taken some time but the children’s hospital involved has taken some positive steps. " Treatment" Resources Changes to Ethics Committee membership (4/08) Growth-Limiting Interventions for Patients with Developmental Disabilities [PDF] (4/08) Administrative policies related to the Sterilization of Minors [PDF] (4/08) Full Investigative Report [PDF] (5/07) HHS Response to NCIL Inquiry (5/07) Statement from Illinois P & A [PDF] (5/07) WPAS/Children's Hospital Joint Press Release [PDF] (5/07) In the News NDRN letter to the National Association of Children's Hospitals and Related Institutions [PDF] (7/07) Documents on the right chronicle the steps enacted in response to the “ Treatment” undertaken at Washington Children’s Hospital and Regional Center and the actions of Disability Rights Washington in response to this treatment. The top three documents from the Washington Children’s Hospital are (1) changes to Ethics Committee membership to include at least one person who will fill the role of advocate for persons with developmental disabilities; (2) new administrative policies related to Growth Limiting Interventions for Patients with Developmental Disabilities; (3) administrative policies related to the Sterilization of Minors. Other documents include the DRW’s reports and letters sent by NDRN and other advocates on the issue. NDRN is hopeful that this information will assist the network in addressing issues like “growth attenuation” or “sterilization” or whatever is the next threat. NDRN will follow up with the leadership of the National Association of Children’s Hospitals and Rehabilitation Institutions in the effort to make these policies from Washington state and similar ones more the norm than the exception. NDRN also will follow up with the American Academy of Pediatrics and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
